    Default Vampire movies.....

I just finished watching "30 Days of Night" for like the third time. Most movie reviewers didn't like it, but I think it's quite good....

I like vampire movies, but I tend to go for the films where the vampire really is the bad guy. I liked "Near Dark", "From Dusk Till Dawn", ect. "Interview With A Vampire" being the exception and to me, probably the best vampire movie ever made.

Most people, especially the women I know, tend to like the more sensual vampire movies. Where the vampire is more romantic, seems less threatening and more just misunderstood. Kind of like "Bram Stoker's Dracula", "Queen of The Damned", or "Twilight"

What kind of vampire films do you like and why?

I just prefer that they have some kind of story, and some decent acting.

And a lot of the vampire movies where they are more of the "bad guys"
tend to just be more like a regular action movie.

A lot of those other movies show vampires as just blood drinking
killing machines. For the good guys to fight against...

But what I really enjoy, is hearing the story of their history, their power, their immortality... I don't mind if after showing all of that, there is some big badass fight. It does not have to be totally full of romance and stuff. Underworld was a bit of a blend of both. A little history, and action. And obviously Interview had a good mix as well. There is some good bloody fights, killing, and combat. But it also shows the things they deal with over the centuries. And I find that very interesting.

There was very little of that in 30 Days of Night...

It could have been "monsters" or "zombies" or any other kind of creature coming after them, and been the same basic movie...

I tend to go for more comedic ones..because most vampire movies now are overdone, outplayed and generic in a sense.

I like all of them, particularly the cheesy or funny ones.

Love at First Bite, Innocent Blood, Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the movie), Forever Knight (the tv show), Kindred the Embraced (tv show), Dracula, Nosferatu, Nosferatu the Vampire, The Hunger, John Badham’s Dracula, Wes Craven's Dracula II, My Best Friend is a Vampire (<3 Robert Sean Leonard), Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey, Fright Night, Blood and Donuts, The Addiction, Shadow of the Vampire.

    Woot! Vampire movies.

I like the old Hammer Horror Christopher Lee Dracula movies. Cheesy yes, but it was a fine stinky cheese, like a limburger or a gorgonzola.

I grew up on the old hammer classics (usually hosted by Elvira!) so I gotta back Buster on the cheesy vamps.

As hilarious as that was, because it actually is mentioning the events of the movie, I found it too boring to read more than halfway through.

    The most important bits:

    KRISTEN STEWART

Wow. I guess this is what it looks like when the unpopular fat girl's pathetic daydreams get written down and published into a bestselling book. Aren't well-written characters supposed to have flaws?

    and

    ROBERT PATTINSON

So, the next generation of young women are currently flocking to see a female lead starring in a movie by a female director based on a bestselling book by a female author, and in this movie the main character wants to become completely submissive and self-sacrificing for a male.

    KRISTEN STEWART

I love you. Put a baby in me.

    this made me laugh:

    KRISTEN STEWART

I'd rather watch "The Messengers" than date either of you. Why don't you go ask Anna instead?

    ANNA KENDRICK

Ohmigod I'm getting Kristen's rejects, that's so awesome!

yeah, I never got the whole vampire attraction thing, and I don't mean in just that movie. The guy is basically a rapist, right? Isn't that what Bram Stoker's book was about?

Given that they cater to the same markets, Twilight is the vampire version of N*Sync... bad boys but in a clean, wholesome acceptable ways. Except the nasty vampires, you know, the bad boys that look nasty but are really quite safe.

I had the impression it was more about repressed sexuality, the attraction/repulsion of being penetrated, and a little bit of the Madonna/Whore complex on crack myself.

Although I once read a chapter of this liberal anthropology of film books where they said that Frankenstein was about Lesbianism.

One of my classmates said Dracula was all antisemitism. With his hook nose and plague bringing...

I don't think it was about raep, however. Unless... you know, all hetro-sex is raep Then you'd be spot on.

Dracula was about the fear of foreign upper class men coming over and taking the virtue of your women, as also the fear of syphilis, which was the AIDS of the day.

You see, the whole business in the Victorian era was about keeping the womenfolk pure and on a pedastal, but the boys were expected to be a bit, shall we say, laddish and oats-sowing. So typically, the Victorians sent their lads overseas to Europe to go tup some French peasant girl or some youthful, dewy Italian lass as opposed to soiling the maidenhood of a good British rose.

Problem was, the Europeans had the same idea, so if you saw Il Viscomti di Napoli Giovannia da Vincenzo showing up to your party, he was probably on the make for your sister.

And of course, everyone was in mortal fear of coming down with 'the pox" which was fatal, incurable, and a death knell to any chance at marraige or keeping your good name. So if you got that, well, you took off to foreign climes and if someone named Maria or Giasella or Noemi came down with what you caught from a dollymop in Rouen, who cares?

Enter both the fuckedupness of purity and the fear of sexual plague. Dracula symbolized both.

Yeahh... But I also felt like all that repressed sexuality in the Victorian era would breed the sort of rampant fear of sexuality that seems to be expressed in Dracula, the novel at least.

Its as though the whole typical "I'm a good christian man struggling with the filth penetrative desires (out side the marital bed)" thing is running in a strong string throughout. Here is this guy, just fucking... er, BITING these hot society chicks that several of the local boys are trying to claim as their own.

Firstly, the guy is obviously a monster for his obvious lack of self-torture and regret regarding his desires for this young ladies. He's clearly living outside the restrictions of society, and thusly spitting on these mens "Good Values". He should be off buying his fun time with some whores.

Secondly, it shows just how deeply this idea of women being 'unable to help themselves' or 'control themselves' then it came to sex. Stoker at least bought in 100% into the idea that women are perpetual children that must be policed, and protected from their own rampant unstable quim's making decisions.

So yeah. In MY opinion, Dracula is just about as much about sex, as it is about disease. And Feminists. And Pudding.

Interview w/ a Vampire is my fave too. I like sexy vampires. if I watch a vampire flick it needs 2 things: sex & blood.

I get a kick out of the comedic ones too, or low budget ones that are not supposed to be comedic, but are anyway.

I am SO NOT on the Twilight bandwagon. I know there are people here who like it, so I will just leave my statement at that.

Plenty of teeny bopper goths love that flick. If they didn't, it would'nt have made all that cash, so I think you're exactly right.

It's such a good cartoon. Animation, humor, plot, dialog. Everything is on level. I'm surprised that no one saw it already. It's definitely a cult cartoon.

"O positive for this special occasion"

I finally found it on TPB.
