    Default Sweet Sounds

I've been trying to come up with a list of the greatest speakers of the last century and/or people you just love to hear recite or do spoken word. It's an eclectic bunch but I would love to hear who others love to hear. I'm thinking as much in terms of the delivery as whether you agree with the message. Here's mine so far:

    Martin Luther King
    Malcolm X
    Lenny Bruce
    Lydia Lunch
    Henry Rollins
    Jello Biafra
    William S. Burroughs
    Allen Ginsberg
    Diamanda Galas
    Ronald Reagan
    JFK
    Shelley Berman (comic)
    Oksana Zabuzhko
    Johnny Cochrane (Amazing Attorney)
    Jack Kerouac
    Jack London
    Dr. Seuss
    Antonin Artaud

Anyways, feel free to add and specify what in an orator makes you tingle. For me, it is a visceral appreciation of style as much as the message. I will generally give credit where it is do as long as the message is not utterly vile.

That was true, unfortunately. I hate Hitler and what he did to Eastern Europe and the specific targetting of jews. Those who like him are reactionary idiots with no knowledge of history.

Gandhi was an amazing combination of a great human being and a great orator.

I wouldn't mind listening to Plato or Aristotle either. Homer could also probably tell a good story.

Far as more recent figures go, the only one I can think of to add to the list is Sean Kennedy. His speeches are definitely worth a listen.

Sean Kennedy was/is a guy who appeared a lot on pirate radio stations (Rant Radio to be specific--he still has a show there). He is convinced, quite rightly I'd say, that everything is pretty well fucked, and recorded a series of rants on why, how this happened, what (according to him) is really going on, and the like. Eventually he got a fairly significant following and started an organization, Kult, dedicated to trying to do something about it. Kult has since disbanded and reformed into two entities, both of which confusingly enough still call themselves Kult.

Information on Kult shouldn't be hard to find if you're curious; I'd drop links to applicable sites, but I can't do that yet.

Having read everything from him that I could get my hands on ... yes, him too.I'm reading through Kallendorf's Humanist Educational Treatises (from Harvard, 2002) at the moment, and Quintilian is one of the writers recommended for a sound education - and that was back in 1424 or so! He still holds good today.
