    Default Quotes You Love?

Offer suggestions of your own, of famous works, people, etc.

Some of My personal favorites from other people are:

"Destroy A God To Become A God!"- Archaon

"Better To Rule In Hell, Than To Serve In Heaven!"- Either Satan or Lucifer, or somebody else.

(I Love saying that to Religious Fanatics. )

Actually, It was John Milton whom I beleive was a priest or something before he went blind. anyway, he wanted to capture the dramatic style of epic poems of englands past by writing the greatest epic poem of all time, based on what he considered the greatest story of all time- the bible. however, very ironically it was that same poem Paradise Lost which was read by many intellectual thinkers, ( really the only people who did a lot of reading at the time, and maybe still today) that read it, and got to thinking about the practical aspects of theology and philosophy, and it convinced a lot of people that matters of society should be secular.

keeping in that train of thought, and influential thinkers of the 19th century, here's a good qoute that combines two in one.

"Voltaire's famous qoute says that ' if god does not exist, then it would be neccesary to invent him.'... To this I say: If god does exist, then it would be neccesary to abolish him."
    -Mikhail Bakunin

I'll post the whole thing, cuz it's one of my favorites too. don't remember exactly which lines it is, something like 32-45. here it is:

"The mind is it's own place
And in itself can make a
Hell of heaven, a Heaven of Hell.
What matter where if I be still the same,
And all but less than he
    Whom thunder hath made greater?

In this place we shall be free,
    The Almighty hath not build
Here for his envy shall not drive us hence.
Here we may reign secure and in my choice:
    To reign is worth ambition, though in Hell;
Tis better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heaven."

Paradise Lost was definitely ironic in its influence on later writers. It was later translated into church slavonic (which gave "Satan" even more grandeur.) I believe the archetype of Satan was influential to writers such as Lermontov, Briusov (Fiery Angel) and Bakunin. Bulgakov had Satan as a major character in Master and the Margarita.

"Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither" has always been a favourite of mine. Particularly appropriate at the moment too.

I'm gonna have to make my poll for:

"I, who enjoy my body with unweary tread, would rather pack with wolves than enter your pest-houses." -- Austin Osman Spare

Still, I think there's always something to be said for the Simpsons as the last bastion of really cool shit on Fox:

Bart: "So I can buy armor-piercing cynanide-tipped rounds?"
    Herb: "It's in the constitution."

gods below. quotes, quotes.. i collect them. currently near the top of the list:

double-penetration sex is like trying to overclock a vagina.
    - Malaveldt, somethingawful

The object in life is not to be on the side of the majority,
but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.
    - Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

rather than parrot the wisdom of others, i occasionally try to be independantly intelligent:

Everyone has one right that no-one can take from them: they can die.

    and:

"Have i wasted my life in the study of comic books and violent japanese cartoons? should i have been eating something other than microwave pizza and doing something other than playing computer strategy games against particularly stupid bots? perhaps. if you think my life was a waste, i think it was better than crouching in a cave waiting for the rain to stop so you could go out and throw ROCKS AT RABBITS!"

    also:
You just wait till you haven't been able to SHIT for three days. THEN you'll know what's IMPORTANT in life.
    - Reverend Ivan Stang, "Letter to Depressed Middle-aged Subgenii"
    and
"To be absolutely honest, although I don't believe in anything too fervently, I do tend to believe in some kind of mind behind the cosmos. I don't like calling it God, because God to most people means a grouchy old man sitting on a cloud, counting all the kids who are masturbating so he can put them in hell later on."

Milton was indeed a priest. The translations of Paradise Lost made it even more ironic. In Russia, it was translated into church slavonic which gave "Satan" even more grandeur. Authors such as Briusov and Lermontov and revolutionaries such as Bakunin ran with it.
