Mark Knopfler is the lead singer of rock band Dire Straits. He is now touring India and is currently in Mumbai.

Tell us, did you really expect all this success when you released 'Sultans of Swing' back in the 70s?

Well, I recommend success to anybody. I know the song really went on to become a smash hit. A journo once told me that it works on several levels. I said, "Really?"

You recently recovered from a major motorbike accident. Did it change things?

Talking about accidents, I just took a look at the Mumbai roads on my way from the airport. But seriously, the accident just made me realize that everything can change in a moment.

Everyone says they like the food and women of India, tell us something new?

I kinda like the things men like.

Why are your songs getting shorter?

I guess I have less to say.

Any lessons for guitarists who try and emulate your style?

I used to fall asleep while playing. Chet Atkins used to do the same. Just repeat the nonsense till you get tired.

Just who is the song Romeo and Juliet dedicated to?

It will spoil it if I tell you. A song is like a book. It means different things to different people. Make your own interpretation.

Who is your inspiration when it comes to your guitar playing?

I am actually a folk musician. The guitar is something I use to write songs. In fact, for any guitar teacher I would be a nightmare of a student.
