the only time i go below-the-belt-mean is when the relationship was bad to begin with but i never expressed how i felt until it was ending. then it would all come out.

it's all about balance... my current gf and i bicker and argue... but it's more like dealing with shit as it's building up. that passive-aggressive, bottling shit up is just too draining to deal with.

People fight, expecially people in an intamate relationship. It's normal and can be delt with, but if you find yourself going "below the belt" regularly then there is probably something wrong with the relationship and the whole thing should probably be reavaluated.
