    Black Hole In Big Apple
    Updated: 11:07, Thursday March 17, 2005

Don't panic but a black hole is far nearer than you may think.

Unitil now it would have taken a very long trip into outer space to see one but now scientists have created their very own black hole in a laboratory in New York.

But thankfully it was not the sort that could consume the Earth

It lasted for a tiny amount of time, a staggering 10 million billion billionths of a second.

The heat generated was 300 million times the temperature on the surface of the Sun.

Scientists used a particle accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, to shoot two beams of gold nuclei at each other at the speed of light.

The intense heat of the collision breaks down the nuclei into quarks and gluons, the most basic building blocks of all normal matter.

These particles then formed a ball of plasma which can be detected because it absorbs jets of particles produced by the collision, so creating a black hole.

Ed Shuryak, a physicist at Stony Brook University in New York said: "It's very useful in that it will inspire thinking in that direction.

"But it's going to be another thng to see if it produces any fruit."

WOW... That is amazing, almost remeinds of the scientist that invented the solvent that could eat through anything... What did He keep it in, I can't remember.

he kept the little black hole..they just found the box and unlocked its magical powers.
i wonder if those particles of the black hole went through a magnifying glass if it would be a hiroshima bomb on a anthill...?

this story doesn't really make any sense. it seems to imply that plasma and a black hole are the same thing. it's pretty obvious that you can generate plasma through nuclear fusion, they discovered that long ago. I don't see the correlation between that and a blach hole. I think what they actually discovered is that when fusion occurs, some particles are "lost"- by that I mean they are reduced to an immeasurable density. while that meets some of the characteristics of a black hole I don't think I really counts as a true one for several reasons. first of all black holes don't simply "go away". It didn't say what triggered the end of this phenominon, but it seems to be that the energy they created was simply expended and lost all of it's potency and was reduced to neutral material (these are not scientific terms, just terms that I am using to demonstrate the effect.) It also doesn't mark the most defining charactersistic of a black hole, which is it's gravitational pull. No elements can pass through a black hole moving slower then the speed of light. and just so we are clear here, nothing moves faster then the speed of light, expect maybe the nexus of a black hole. based on that, I would think that even a subatomic black hole would have a pretty signifigant impact on the earth if one opened up in the middle of new york city, and a vacuum tunnel wouldn't be able to contain it, since light and gravity still pass through it.

well, i haven't learned THAT much about black holes yet, but as my major involves mainly physics, i have learned a little, and i would have to agree with morning glory. with no gravitational pull or resulting merr ring, it's a ball of plasma. plasma is rad though. they've used magnetic plasma to contain fusion in a case that's cool to the touch in japan. i've heard theories on similar magnetic plasma being used to contain a black hole, but if that's what would be necessary, i don't think a particle accelerator would cut it.

but i by no means claim to be an expert on the subject. just stuff i've picked up in physics

I have wondered that myself. No movie updates in a long time.

So I wonder how long it's going to take for the military to turn that black hole/plasma shit into a weapon.

Anyway, back to the supposed black hole, its these kinda experiments that I would rather hear are being done off world.
