Default Have you ever noticed that turkey bacon cooks backwards?

I've been trimming a little fat out of my diet and turkey bacon browns on the top, instead of where it touches the pan on the bottom. Weird.

Have you ever noticed that turkey bacon cooks backwards? Are there other foods that do this? Anyone know the science behind this?

Microwaves don't cook "from the inside out", they penetrate until they hit water, then start heating from that point inward just like a conventional oven. It's just some food has a dry surface layer that stays cool.

Try it on a ball of dough - zap it for a few secs, cut it in half and feel.. you'll find the warm bit is a shell just inside the surface but the center is still cold.

As to turkey bacon, it's cooking strange because it's a paradox, because IT'S NOT BACON. Do we detect a lack of pig-presence in the product? Is bacon cured pork?

Coming soon to a store near you.. "Turkey Bagels : like bagels, but birdier"

I'm a fan of uncured bacon. Pretty much bacon without the nitrate action. I don't think bacon has to be cured to be technically bacon.

Ah, here we go. Bacon definitions:

    Modern Language Association (MLA):
"bacon." Online Etymology Dictionary. Douglas Harper, Historian. 01 Jul. 2007. <Dictionary.com http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bacon>.

c.1330, "meat from the back and sides of a pig" (originally either fresh or cured), from O.Fr. bacon, from P.Gmc. *bakkon "back meat" (cf. O.H.G. bahho, O.Du. baken "bacon").

    Random House Unabridged Dictionary

the back and sides of the hog, salted and dried or smoked, usually sliced thin and fried for food.

Here's something funny. Try saying "Beer Can" without sounding like a Jamaican asking for Bacon.
