    Default Social anxiety

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_anxiety

While the fear of social interaction may be recognized by the person as excessive or unreasonable, considerable difficulty can be encountered overcoming it. Approximately 13.3% of the general population may meet criteria for social anxiety disorder at some point in their lifetime, according to the highest survey estimate, with the male to female ratio being 1:1.5 respectively.

anyone have any knowledge or advice on this matter?

huh... it happends to me when I'm staying at home for a long time or when I'm isolated from outer world interacting only with co-workers (my job description).

Even I'm fully aware of situation and what's happening to me I can't really turn it off or something. Only that helps is socialising and going out untill it goes away. I usualy get heart tapping and losing my breath. Good advice is to breath deep couple times to calm down. And don't be worried about it, it's nothing unusual, it happends to the people all the time and it's totaly normal reaction if you've been isolated for a while.

Based on the comorbidity % I'm reading in that article, I would see a professional. I know people who are reclusive for other stress-related reasons. I hope it is just a social phobia. That usually relates to depression or an anxiety disorder. Those are generally easier to diagnose and treat. You definitely want to rule out anything that may be connected with one or numerous traumatic incidents. That's a whole different ballgame. It would be rare to present just "social phobia" in that case though. Good Luck.

ativan works for me. klonopin gives me nasty headaches.

the heart tapings you experience are PVC ... rob knows what it means .. post something contractions or another. when one gets nervous adrenaline gets pumped into the system, sporadically, causing the heart to do funny uncomfortable things. the end result is different for everyone, i get what feels like a cramp in my chest, rob feels like he's being kicked, but the cause is the same. try coughing to reset the heart beat and slow down your breathing. I know thats like asking one to meditate in the middle of a battle but trust me, it helps.

OliX makes a point, weed makes things FAR worse. try to cut back. hell even cigarettes would make my heart act weird for a few seconds once the stimulant of nicotine kicked in from the first smoke of the day. the only thing that doesn't make mine worse is coffee.

just be thankful that you (and i) only have Social Anxiety rather than the Generalised version my hunny has. Anything and most likely everything makes his chest tight and his brain reel. i can barely handle my own issues, i have no idea how he does it.

thanks for the advice, but i 'm not even sure if i have it.. i was just searching the web for symptoms that match mine and found this social anxiety article..
seems to fit in some cases but i never went to the doctor to actually get diagnosed on something like this..
i got sent to a therapist before, but for different reason. my doctor said it has smth to do with being distrusting towards general public, especially men and that it's a pattern i must learn how to avoid..
i'm not sure about any of this though cause i never really went to see the shrink(i dont trust them(lol) and there are other reasons) AND my doctor's pretty incompetent so it could have been smth else..

Rob may want to ask a Doc about propranolol (was mentioned here as a PTSD med) All it actually does is lower heartrate and bp. You generally can't have panic attacks on it. Been using it regularly for the last year, has been amazing. You basically have no fight/flight response to much of anything.

PS: Happy Thanksgiving To Everyone. I'm working on getting some book donations for the Libraries here. Won't be on much.

why does everyone turn to pills imideately without considering natural healing...
I had signs of social anxiety when I was depressed couple years ago and after that when I was isolated from outer world due to my job and it's easy to deal with without any medications... go out and meet other people, try to be more socially active before you turn to any pills or doctors. If that doesn't help see a doctor.

trust me... pills might hide the symptom's but not get rid of the real problem... it's only you that can help your self (or a good shrink if you really don't know how)

yep i thought about that just the last day.. it seems that alot of people here on blueblood have psychological problems of some sort.. one thing i didn't see here is someone saying that they could be sorted out without drugs.. makes me wonder in what kind of society we live since all problems are solved by taking drugs of some sort. when mostly they only help with the symptoms and not resolve the real problem..

and why exactly do so many people in this society even have these problems.

oh give it a break, oli! im not sorry i live in the country i was born in and served and etc. etc. now youre just being silly.

as far as social anxieties go,yeah-they suck. easiest way to get over it?get out there and be fabulous! don't worry about what people think-no matter what you do or look like there's always gonna be three kinds of people-
the ones who are jealous and hate you-
the ones who recognize your individuality and love you
and the ones who don't care.

    trust me.
    don't dream it, BE it!

!btw, we don't wanna fight on this issue because that's what 13 want from us (so far there's 13 known rulers that decides future of our world)

i have anxiety issues but they are more "generalized" rather than just 'social' problems. i am pretty isolated tho. ive been on paxil for it for the past few years. it has really helped. and the slight antidepressant efffect has worked wonders as well. the past 6 months or so tho, they have been hellish. finally got my therapist to prescribe something more. ive now been on klonapin for a few days. it has yet to really start working...i feel more relaxed tho. no more of that always "on edge" feeling that was driving me nutso.

Okay, my last post was dashed off pretty hastily on my way out hte door to work.

I've been to 4 therapists and most of them were either a) full of shit or b) thought i was full of shit. I spent the last 8 years doing self analysis and diagnosis trying my best to work through the worst of. The drugs i use only in situations where the symptoms need masking. I don't take them with any regularity, but during job interviews and the last few nights when I was working on a TV show, just to keep from having a full blown freak out on the air. To me the drugs are more of a hand up when I really need it, a crutch if you will.
Rob doesn't actually take his drugs unless it's absolutely necessary. Really he just carries the bottle around as a security blanket. Both of us would rather not take the pills but actual help is so hard to come by, ya know, esp when you're broke.
