Btw, the Bible is supposedly the most Adult book ever written, and even has More Erotica than all the World's Porno, Erotica,Etc, even if you make them all combined.

If that was true, you wouldn't hate it. You'd be quoting scripture like Billy Graham. I can understand hating To Kill A Mockingbird, but why do you hate the book for a religion you don't even believe in? That would be like me hating the Koran even though I've never read it. There comes a point when religious intolerance becomes just as ignorant as the religions you're intolerant of. We get it, YOU HATE GOD. If I were you I'd probably hate him too.
By the by, I can't think of any books I hate.

Nope, I read those books, and I Hated them afterwards.

And the Song/Book of Soloman is among the Most Erotic Stories/Songs/Poems, of all stories.

And what was that other comment supposed to mean?

I doubt that one book of love poems equals more porn that all the porn in the world. Have you ever even been to a porn shop?
As for what the other comment meant, if you have to ask...

Yep. I went with a best friend when she went to buy a Dildo and Strap-on.

was quoting some unknown person. That is why I said "supposedly" .

Explain what you mean, and I can tell you if you are wrong or right about what you meant, implied,or asked.

Nothing highlights ones ignorance or stupidity than telling another what books they hate.

Brightstar - You've asked many times for our help and opinions...and we've indulged you. The kindness extended to you is beyond what most other communities would extend so I'd seriously rethink insulting a fella lilke Jasperino. He brought up a valid point...many threads digress into explaining things to you...and to be honest you're quite selfish about it. Do everyone a favor and stop playing the fool...it's getting old. Y

ou're not a victim kid, but damned if you don't seem to love playing one. Hell ever think maybe you hate those books because you're too self involved to understand them?

I thank you all for that.
I apologize if I insulted anybody, although this was simply about books people hated or disliked. That is all there was to the thread.
Im not acting, but I tend to get into semantics.

Being self involved has nothing to do with that. I understand the books completely, but I dont like them, more for the content , along with the other reviews.

Example: Atticus finch was proclaimed the greatest hero in literature by some book society, and I disagree with that, so I hate that book even more.
I do not play the victim, and am still saving to get out of here, but the progress is still extremely slow.

Just because you hate a book or something, does not mean ignorance by default. I try to learn more about stuff before I decide whether to like, dislike, or hate a book, person, etc.

And even though I gave the finger smileys, I put the drunk smiley with the friends singing at the end, to show that no offense was meant, and that was simply because of the insult from before.

Hating something without a justifiable reason IS ignorant.

I have lots of reasons that are justifiable for Hating what I hate.

Although I hate the characters more than the actual book or story.
I Hate the girl of the trial for what she did to the guy she accused of doing stuff to.
I Hate that she lied under oath, and lots of other stuff she did.
I Hate her father for when he tried to kill the children, until Boo Radley saved them.

In The Pocket Watch : I hated that because the son had helped a man who was running away by letting him stay in the hey/hay,barn,etc , the father took him out into the back yard, and Killed him with a shotgun.

The book was called the pocket watch, because that is what the guy gave to the son as payment for letting him stay there.

When I Hate something, I hate it for a reason.

Ok this actually makes it more confusing. I've heard people say they hate a book because of the style, structure, pace, depth of characters, and yes because of the events in a story...but never because they didn't like the event itself. I mean I don't like killing people in day to day life...but if it's part of a story I accept it as part of the story. I don't hate a story about racism because it has racists in it...

Granted that some events in a story are important to the story itself, but that doesnt mean I have to like the events.

That's a totally diffrent line of reasoning then. Hating the events in a book and the book itself are very diffrent.

Reminds me of a Christian who once confessed that he held his faith because it made him feel better than other people.

You can most surely hate a religion without believing in their creed. Christianity obviously does exist just as manifestly as their 'God' doesn't. I'd have to go against the old cliche that the Bible's 'full of great stories'. Obviously, some of it depends upon the translation, but as a whole it's a pretty slipshod effort. If it really is the literal word of God, he shouldn't give up his day job to become a full time novelist. Compared to, say the Norse myths, Greek legends, or even Gilgamesh, the Bible's a pretty crappy piece of work. Revelations is kind of trippy though I guess.

Why should Brightstar hate God, if he's the compassionate deity of the New Testament? Are you more of an Old Testament kind of guy?

For what it's worth, Jane Austen really irritates me in the literary department.

Then again, I wonder what the world would look like
now if Jesus never preached anything, and if people

Or all wiccans? Or Roman gods?

Shouldn't that line be followed by gales of insane laughter?

(Incidentally, I wouldn't deny the Bible's had an impact on all of our lives - that's why some of us consider it such a nasty little book. If it weren't for that - hell, there's plenty of pages, and it's usually printed on pretty absorbant paper, so I'm sure we could all find some kind of use for it...)

ill try and make this as simple as possible. (i can only try as theres a half bottle of vodka on my desk, and you can surley work out why its only half full.)

Everything you belive, that you know trust or accept is the work of the bible.

If i went into the street and beat some random person to death with a brick, (which i am sorely tempted) yol would be disguisted, because as you all know, murder is wrong. But the real point to ask is why murder is wrong.

Every law (asuming your american) is based on the christian basis of good and evil, of right and wrong, and so murder is wrong, for "thou shalt not murder"

but i say, fuck that, murder CAN be justified, any sin can be justified, if you stop and think about it for a moment. a molested child, killing an abusive parent? who in reality would condemn that child?

Christianty, and in reflection, your whole world, is a place of black and white, i however prefer grey, and for me murder is, on occasion, completly justfied.

Especially when its murder in the name of "defending" one's country.

I couldn't agree with you more about the whole grey area. My only point is that there were moralistic codes looooooong before Christianity. Christianity, in the span of time, is relatively recent. And they did build on a lot of the polythetic religions that came before. So to blame Christianity for all the laws and codes is a bit of a stretch. Even the Code of Hammurabi had provisions in it for punishing murderers. As well as divorce, owning land, etc. Hell, Hobbes even argued that it was impossible to have a society without some kind of moral code to govern its actions. (I believe it was set forth in Leviathan if I am remembering it right. Its been about seven years since I read it).

I am not defending Christianity or negating its impact on modern society. I am just saying that it should not be the scapegoat for moralistic codes that date back to 1780 BC.

what? i dont care if some goat farmer had some divinde revalation from his fuck buddy, the bible still dictatcts the laws of your world.

think about this, when you in court do they A) make you swear on the bible. B) make you swear on a goat ass.

Well what do you think the Bible is? Its the divine relevations of some shepards (goat farmers). It was written by men.
And there is nothing the Bible that hasn't been said by some religion that came before it. Before the Bible, the world wasn't some wild and unruly place with no laws.
Just because the Bible is the most prevelant now, doesn't neccessarily make it the basis for a society. Laws such as punishing murders have been around for centuries. If Christianity crumbles or is superceded by another religion (as usually happens), then are you going to say the new society is based on Bokonism? Or whatever the new religious backbone of a country is?
Everything builds on what came before it. That is all I am saying. I am no fan of the Bible myself but it is not the be all and end all for laws in this or any country for that matter. There will always be laws against certain things that people feel are instinctually "wrong". You can't blame one single book for that. All the laws and social morays of modern society have been a long time coming, not just since the advent of Christianity.

Yeah, but that is why we are a bit annoyed with the bible's influence.
If we say we hate it, we hate it because it sets all these rules.
Rules that are not current, not relevant, and are based on ancient history.
The fact that we still live by these rules, rather than coming up with
new, modern, more realistic rules, is really annoying. To me at least...

Ethics and morals need to change with the times.

So eastern philosophy, paganism, and past religions have no influence?

The things *I* accept come from a lot of different sources, many of them
came about centuries before the bible was ever written.
Go to China, or an Arab country, or India, and see how much
influence the bible had on their country's philosophies...
Very little. Yes, Christians affected things in the world.
But to say everything is the work of the bible, is a little egotistical.
Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, all had a huge influence on the world...

Just about any book I was forced to read in high school, including, but not limited to : Lord of the Flies, All Quiet on the Western Front and half a dozen others.

I can explain why i hate the Bible. The parts that are up for interpratation, VS the parts that need to be taken literally, which is which? And how big was the pen that God used to write it? Oh! you say it wasn't actually He who wrote it but a bunch of "prophets" that were given the word of God in their heads? So how do you know who was a prophet and who was a little too fond of magic mushrooms? You don't, you say? Well I've read the Bible cover to cover and I havne't found anything that says gays are unnatural, that animals don't have souls and that women shouldn't be allowed to speak their minds, so go stuff it. I don't so much as hate the book it self, just the people that read it hoping for guidance from a 2000 yrs dead carpenter who had a penchant for throwing people who disagreed with him as a child off the roof, or a story about a man who's daughters got him drunk and then slept with him in order to conceive children (Abraham Rachel and can't remeber the other daughter's name). (I guess it's erotic if you're into drunken incest.) And what about all the "other" books of the bible, the banned books that tell of Jesus as a child, or his marriage to Mary Magdalen? Or that John was his brother? (and I quote : May gave birth to Jesus never having known a man's touch, but she was married to Joseph. If you're trying to say that a married couple never got down, then I'm sorry but you're wrong" ~ Rufus, the 13th apostle).

I guess that's enough ot of me. I'm done moving by the way.
    K

I can explain why i hate the Bible. The parts that are up for interpratation, VS the parts that need to be taken literally, which is which? And how big was the pen that God used to write it? I agree completely!
I find explaining what I mean to be difficult, which often leads to misunderstandings.

THANK YOU! That is -exactly- what I was trying to get at. You rock! (and yes, I mean this seriously NOT sarcastically)

It's the kind of attitude that people raised in a Christian environment often have.
They are told that the bible tells of the beginning of the world, and tells of god's
involvement in everything since then. So they think that the bible, and god,
are part of everything we see in the world today. They completely ignore
the fact that other cultures create their own religions, laws, beliefs, and morality,
without ever hearing about the bible, or Jesus, etc... Cultures just naturally create
religions and laws. The Egyptians, Mayans, Aztecs, etc... One religion may have
one set of rules, but if you are an Aztec, killing people and drinking blood
may be perfectly acceptable... And the bible had no influence there, because
no Christian had ever set foot there to help "influence" their culture,
until the day they came and wiped it out. So yes, Christians have
affected other cultures, by killing them. But the bible did not create
or influence "everything" in the world.... Far from it. Hopefully it will
continue to have less and less effect as time goes on...

I read quite a bit and haven't run into a lot of books I hated. Among the few are Willa Cather's O Pioneers. The dry scanty prose and absolutely plodding pacing made me want to claw my eyes out.

I've also read some books on writing I thought were expensive crap. Most of them put together from stealing other peoples ideas and common sense, put some pretty words in there about karma and flow and BAM you got a writing book. I really really hate that.

I'm also not entirely fond of Grisham or the like. I don't begrudge the success but the formula fiction tends to annoy me after say oh....ten books. So I don't read them.
