The “patron saint” of narco-traffickers didn’t save two men from getting arrested for having 50 kilograms of cocaine in the trunk of their car — which they parked illegally in the driveway leading to the Cook County sheriff’s office in Maywood, authorities said Tuesday.

At 8 p.m. Saturday, sheriff’s gang officers spotted Ramirez-Rodriguez’s Toyota Camry facing the wrong direction in Maybrook Drive, which leads to the sheriff’s police station and the Cook County courthouse in Maywood.

Ramirez-Rodriguez did not have a driver’s license and the officers spotted a statue of Jesus Malverde — the so-called patron saint of drug traffickers in Mexico— on the center console, Jackson said.

“Clearly the narco-saint doesn’t protect everyone,” she said.

The men allegedly were coming from a nearby warehouse where they had put the drugs in the truck of the car. There also was a crate of green peppers in the trunk, apparently to disguise the scent of the cocaine, Jackson said.

Jackson said the men were working for a Mexican drug cartel. The investigation is continuing into where the drugs were destined, she said.

Authorities estimated the street value of the cocaine at $19.3 million.

I've got a slight suspicion these guys will be dead within 6 months.
