I agree with you on the Digital Playground Pirates. I'm going to have to find Captain Kidd and the Slave Girl.

I dunno; I dig Pan's attitude, but his sense of style really sucks.

International Talk Like a Pirate day wasn't fueled by any of these movies.
It was created by Bobby Henderson in his recently founded religion The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

I think watching some pirate movies can help one get into the spirit of things, if you, ya know, enjoy fun.

Nonetheless, if you clicked the first link in the article, it goes to http://www.blueblood.net/2007/09/int...-a-pirate-day/ which is the 2007 ITAPD article where I explained a bit about the origins of International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

My understanding is that although devotees of The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster may refer to themselves as pirates and talk like pirates often, the specific September 19 holiday was founded by two guys named Mark Summers and John Baur, with assistance from their friend Brian Rhodes and boosting from one of my favorite humorists, the talented Dave Barry.

I might add that domain registration records appear to support news reports on the origins of the celebration, indicating that International Talk Like a Pirate Day started around 2002 (talklikeapirateday.com and talklikeapirate.com), while venganza.org was registered in 2004 and states on the site that "The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, while having existed in secrecy for hundreds of years, only recently came into the mainstream when this letter was published in May 2005." So looks like talking like a pirate on September 19 predates Pastafarianism.

Your missing quite a frew movies that are way better than the majority of the movies on that list. In no order.

1.)Cutthroat Island. Maybe not the best, but a damn good pirate movie.
2.)Shipwrecked... Gabriel Byrne plays a badass. But no one really knows about this movie
    3.)GOONIES! (need I say more).
4.)Treasure Island - Its a classic for a reason and the pirates of the Carribean originally ride included many scenes from this movie
4b.) Return to Treasure Island. decent, but not as good as the first
5.)Muppet Treasure Island - hehehe tim curry anyone?
6.) even as a stretch, id included the princess bride.
7.) 20,000 leagues under the sea. Yes, he was a pirate.
8.) Oh, and the documentary of Napster.

I might add that I don't really care about two stoners that decided to come up with their own holiday. If I don't get paid time off for it, then it's not a real holiday. Plus you can't really give credit to someone for taking something that they didn't invent, that no one invented, that is just a general thing that people might do sometimes and ascribing an arbitrary date to celebrate it.

I declare march 23 to be national eat-pancakes day. So now everyone on the internet has to give me credit for it whenever they eat a pancake, especially if it's on that day.

Uh... sorry Amelia, when you say "Top Ten of All Time" I assume you're referring to "quality" and not the "top ten highest grossing", and such...

In that case Hook, and Peter Pan get booted right the fuck off the list.

I mean how are you going to have those two, and not Yellow Beard? Which is easily 10,000 times better than both combined?

Not to mention Roman Polanski's Pirates. That movie is so much better than Pirates of the Caribbean that it's hard to even articulate why, and wherefor so I won't really bother. Starting a mutiny by dropping rats into the crew's chowder trumps Johnn Depp anyday (yeah, it does. deal.) And even if that didn't do it, Walter Mathau in a peg leg tops it all. That movie kicks so much ass. I don't care. (I'm iffy on PotC, it's a good pirate movie, but in the top ten? eh. it beats Yellow Beard, but not by much.)

You've already got a Captain Kidd movie, but Charles Laughton made one that's just freakin' brilliant. (Ironically titled "Captain Kidd" I think.) He writes out a "Death LIst" and crosses off the names of his enemies one by one as he does them in. Too cool.

You've got Capt. Blood, and some other good ones on there so cool beans... and I DO agree that Digital Playground's Pirates belongs there too... but c'mon.

Kitty and I are in DP's Pirates 2 as extras (I get to drive the boat!) and yet I still haven't seen the first one. We'll be in LA for the premiere next week.

Interesting to see belladonna in this one, I guess they upped the ante from all the other dodger JJ wannabes.

by "see" I mean that figuratively, as I didn't see the first one nor will I be seeing the sequel. I'm not a real big fan of trying to watch acting from someone that can't even fake an orgasm ( I mean pornstars in general). But it might be a funny movie to watch while you are stoned.

Not to put a damper on this whole "Pirate" thread, but....First of all, if "Pirates of the Caribbean" never came out, would people even give a shit about pirates right now? Especially women.

Also, If Johnny Depp was not in "Pirates" would people give a shit about pirates now...

And thirdly, I don't ever remember pirates seen as romantic until Disney's "Pirates" came out.

The truth is pirates were theives, rapists, killers, and pretty much all scum. The last thing they ever did in real life was anything for good. Not just that but, Jesus, they all must have stunk to high friggin' heaven. How often can you take a bath of a pirate ship. What? In salt water? I don't think so. How often did their clothes ever get washed on the high seas. Could you possibly imagine how their hygiene was? Their teeth alone must have been nasty as fuck. Everytime I see that scene when Kira kisses Johnny I think to myself, "He must taste like the foulest thing you could imagine." Go out on the streets and kiss a dirty nasty hobo. Yeah...That's how it would have been to kiss Johnny the pirate.

Other than that, yeah, I don't mind Pirate movies. My favorite is "The Island" with Michael Caine. I like that they show the pirates in a little bit more of a realistic fashion...albeit Hollywood style.

I think that's a somewhat oversimplified 'truth'. A 'pirate', strictly speaking, merely refers to someone without citizenship or allegiance to any country; and the time they lived in was called the imperial era for a reason. The seas were all about violent 'with us or against us' international political conflicts, and ships with national allegiances did their fair share of the killing and plundering.

With international conflict comes nationalistic propaganda, and obviously, ships with crews that played these games without the guise of a national cause to legitimize them weren't portrayed very favorably. So really, I wonder how much of this view on pirates is really true, how often it was true, and how many crews were just people sick of being drafted to do the exact same horrible things you accuse them of for the interests of kings and nobles.

Plundering with support of a sovereign state might make one merely a privateer, rather than a pirate. Depending on who was describing it.

Douglas Fairbanks was a swashbuckling pirate as a romantic lead as long ago as 1926. Superman's physicality is said to have been based on him in the original comics.

Yeah, but that was over 80 years ago. I talking about the last 3 or 4 decades.

I think in modern days in general, we've really failed to comprehend the violence and seriousness of pirates, but I absolutely agree with you that a lot of the current pirate frenzy can be attributed to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which is why I placed them at the top of the list.

It really bothers me that people have to come with the angries. I mean, if you have a suggestion, even a superior suggestion, ya know, suggest it. Too many people come with the whole 'YOUR WRONG' or 'learn2research' or whatever. I've also noticed that these sorts of people tend to not have any other posts either. All that stress is not necessary.

I also strongly feel that if you are going to barge into other people's conversation shouting about alleged inaccuracy or whatever, the least you could to is BE RIGHT yourself.

Who would have thought people could get so incredibly worked up over fictional pirates.

    * I second Cutthroat Island, and Muppet Treasure Island. Those are on my personal top ten of Pirate Movies, along with "The Pirate" with Gene Kelly, and anything "Sinbad."

    * Also, I agree with the negatives, and the one or three people who all have to stress that all Pirates were evilbad and Johnny Depp invented Pirate. There is always some romanticism of the anti-hero, from Mobsters, to Samurai to Pirates.

Every story has two sides, everyone was someone's bad guy, truth is relative, and fantasy romance is mostly without dreary reality of a grey-toned world.

I'm not sure if this is partially directed toward me and believe it or not, during my hectic day at work, this comment actually kept on popping up in my head. So....I have to tell you that the most wonderful thing about BlueBlood is that you can actually be yourself....inadequacies and all. I think, for all of us not to state how we feel about certain things, due to all us trying to be perfectly "neighborly" here would be a travesty. One remarkable thing about this forum...And the reason I find myself compelled to come back, is that we all seem to get "our say". What I find is that even in some "dickhead" comments we make, we ALL seem to, for the most part, be O.K. with it. I've been posting for a couple of months now and it seems, except for a few times, we all are very understandable with others comments. Very few times do I see another person call each other a "name" due to the comments that were made by said person...Be it by actual fact or by opinion or judgement. Is emotion sometimes shown in how we speak? Well, yeah...But why the Hell not? Are we not human? Is that emotion as "Volt" would say..Sometimes seen as "poor"...Sure...And why not? We all beat to a different drum and in that, we all are wonderful specimans of the human psyche. Is this not a forum of certain( as society sees it ) deviant behavior? Sure, yet, the real truth is we ARE society. The REAL society and in that we have real feelings, good or bad, for better or for worse, and we speak what we feel and we speak what we see, at least to ourselves, as the "truth" or what we believe as so.. And THAT to me is the real Utopia. Being able to be yourself, good or bad, and for everyone listening, to be able to accept who the real you is. Good or bad...And then from that point on, tell you truthfully why your thoughts and understanding are actually understandable or that what you believe is just totally a fuck-screw and you REALLY need to be educmicated as to what really is the facts. To me....I love all you real people...AND that's why I keep coming back. To me, Hell, bring your angries and let's talk about it. You might get me...I met get you...Maybe not, but in the end as long as we all listen, maybe someone can change their views...Maybe it might instill actually why we keep what we believe even stronger, but I swear I think we are better for it.
