I guess I just really didn't see Lord of the Rings or Pirates as action movies.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the most exceptional men ever to walk the earth. That said, I think Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is pretty darn masculine.

In terms of the masculinity of leading men, I think some of that tends to fluctuate decade to decade and some of the presentation just has to do with better technology. We have better skin care and hair products for both men and women now.

I love Humphrey Bogart, but, if he were alive today, I'd expect him to invest in moisturizer and a gym membership, and I wouldn't think him less of a man for doing so. That's technology marching on, not men failing to be men.

I never found Sean Connery or Roger Moore particularly manly in the older James Bond flicks. Either Humphrey Bogart before them or Harrison Ford after them comes across as more of a man, at least to me.

And here are some other photos of Clint Eastwood:

    It's rugged vs. non-rugged.

I mean, Harrison Ford in the last movie has access to a gym and wears an earring, but he's still the scruffy, unshaven, facially scarred man of action we know and love.

ZOMG Pirates and Lord not being action movies? I gather the swashbuckling scenes between Depp and Bloom don't count, nor do the epic battle scenes in LOTR.

Arnie S. has all of the masculine features of the muscleman: jaw, brow ridges, square-ish face, veins and sinew. The Rock on the other hand has soft, feminine curves to his musculature. I envy Samoans the ability to be large and muscled but beautiful at the same time.... but as I said, it's the modern world.

Yeah, I miss the 80s. Shovelhead bikes, Skinny Puppy and the Sisters of Mercy, rap was fun and about BKs and house parties. Commodore 64 was the most fun you could have with your clothes on, and boards like this would have included regular meets in person.

I just can't go there with you on The Rock being uber-femmey, although I've heard that anabolic steroid tech is better today and less likely to cause brow ridges and such, although acne is still a problem. Before anyone freaks out about me saying this, Arnie has written at least one book where he said that people should not use steroids in place of working out, but that they are excellent for completing a perfect physique. And that whole murder/suicide scandal with the wrestler a while back clearly exposed that wrestlers do use steroids. Maybe The Rock is the exception, but I wouldn't bet money I couldn't afford to lose on it.

Maybe I just don't consider swashbuckling action, so nope I do not consider Pirates or LOTR action movies. Fantasy quest does not necessarily equal action, although it should always equal fun costumes.

For examples of recent flicks I would consider action movies, I would go with Casino Royale, Crank, 3:10 to Yuma, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Sin City.
