yeah, I agree a hundred bands that use the same chords and the same screaming vocals and the same " I'm so bad ass because I worship satan and wear face paint like KISS" are wayyy more awesome than the bands that pioneered all the musical techniques (minus going "rarggghhhh!") that the bands of today use, and then talk shit about them.

Zeppelin was the more technically proficient, but Sabbath was far more influential in the long run. I just wish they'd stop dragging their own legacy through the dirt in order to squeeze a few more bucks out of their long-suffering fans.

Both of those bands that you mentioned are 'modern black metal', but they were also a part of the 'true Norwegian scene' of the early 90. Well, right after the Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum story, anyways. They were there from the beginning, and evolved. Which is a much better thing than what some "new old-school black metal bands" are doing today. Playing the same music as Darkthrone did 10 years ago. And, black metal is pretty "dry", but thats the way it is. You can either like it or not - no big philosophy.

I think it would go like this: led zeppelin will play a 30 minute version of Kashmir and in that time black sabbath will either have passed out/OD'd . so the winner will be led zeppelin, ugh, cuz they are still playing, but no one will know cuz there audience will have fallen asleep as well.

Obviously youve never seen Sabbath live they are fucking awesome musicians and they still tour (though they milk the whole reunion thing way to much) where the hell are Robert Plant and Jimmy Page?

Now now now, let's not pretend that Zep never went on stage too fucked up to play. I do believe that they were fairly well aquainted with a long list of illegal substances.
And yes, admittedly Ozzy has devolved into something that is more than a bit embarrassing to anyone who... well okay, just anyone. But I dont think that that should detract from the legacy Sabbath (Black) left on music in general. Some of the greatest musicians of our time have been heavily influenced by Sabbath's music (Without Iommi, heavy metal would not exist as we know it today). Same can be said about Zeppelin. I think that Zeppelin showed that you can bring lots of different musical influences into rock and roll. As far as raw musicianship goes, Zep wins hands down (my opinion). However, I think that Sabbath probably had the edge on coming up with THE RIFF, ya know... the one you cant get out of your head for a week. Listen to the lead riff in "For Whom The Bell Tolls" (One of Metallica's finer moments), and its the riff from "Faries Wear Boots". There have been loads of recycled Zep riffs that have appeared in songs. Really, trying to compare the two is like apples and oranges. I think that these two bands probably did more to change popular music than anyone since the Beatles.
