Journalist: U.S. planning for possible attack on Iran
White House says report is 'riddled with inaccuracies'
Monday, January 17, 2005 Posted: 8:11 AM EST (1311 GMT)

Seymour Hersh said his information on Iran came from "inside" sources.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Bush administration has been carrying out secret reconnaissance missions to learn about nuclear, chemical and missile sites in Iran in preparation for possible airstrikes there, journalist Seymour Hersh said Sunday.

The effort has been under way at least since last summer, Hersh said on CNN's "Late Edition."

In an interview on the same program, White House Communications Director Dan Bartlett said the story was "riddled with inaccuracies."

"I don't believe that some of the conclusions he's drawing are based on fact," Bartlett said.

Iran has refused to dismantle its nuclear program, which it insists is legal and is intended solely for civilian purposes.

Hersh said U.S. officials were involved in "extensive planning" for a possible attack -- "much more than we know."

"The goal is to identify and isolate three dozen, and perhaps more, such targets that could be destroyed by precision strikes and short-term commando raids," he wrote in "The New Yorker" magazine, which published his article in editions that will be on newsstands Monday.

Hersh is a veteran journalist who was the first to write about many details of the abuses of prisoners Abu Ghraib in Baghdad.

He said his information on Iran came from "inside" sources who divulged it in the hope that publicity would force the administration to reconsider.

"I think that's one of the reasons some of the people on the inside talk to me," he said.

Hersh said the government did not answer his request for a response before the story's publication, and that his sources include people in government whose information has been reliable in the past.

Hersh said Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld view Bush's re-election as "a mandate to continue the war on terrorism," despite problems with the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

he should take a few lessons from Uncle Joe Stalin, and learn some patience. give it a year or two and most people will have forgotten, and then he can do it again.

what i can't understand is, if he's got the entire religious Right on his side, why doesn't he just say "God told me to start a new Crusade. We're taking back the holy land including Iran, Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Mauritius."

Reporter: Sir, Mauritius isn't in the Middle East...
Boosh: Yeah, but they've got some great beaches, so why not?

    scary thought

I was watching a quiz show last night & the presenter asked one of the contestants to tell her which 3 were Larry Curly and Moe.

The contestant, in all sincerity said, "the 3 musketeers". My faith in humanity will never be the same.

bush can do whatever he wants now as long as he doesnt alienate the senate and doesnt do anything thats blatantly illegal that he cant cover up because he no longer has to worry about re-election on the bright side i dont think the republican party will seat a president for a very long time after bush is done

He can and may well attack Syria and Iran. A Revolution in Saudi Arabia will be fomented from within using shiite muslims.

I would agree were it not for the current state of the Democratic Party. Who amongst them could beat Senator John McCain? If the Republicans managed to nominate a non-christian conservative in '08, it's all over. I would support McCain personally.

No, but everyone knows Iran has nuclear capabilities. The invasion of Iraq was part of a broader strategy that I have seen outlined in foreign policy thinktanks for years. Once they were in, they had every intention of letting the rest fall like dominoes. Only Qadhafi has saved his skin by disarming.

shiver me timbers.....thats really scary shit. But if they attack Iran then the rest of the middle east isn't just going to wait its individual turns too are they?

They don't need to hit the rest of the Middle East. Once Syria and Iran fall, there will not be any true opposition. Mubarak in Egypt is our guy. The Saudis are shitting their pants trying to remain in good graces with the US. The rest of the Middle East has little to no relevance regarding both militants and oil. Do you remember the name of the country where the US ship was hit? That'd be about the only other factor I can even think of. Libya has already disarmed.

Yemen, that's the one. That will probably end up being the last true base for al qaeda etc. I would be surprised to see Iran, Syria, and Saudi Arabia in its current form 5-10 years from now. Once you establish a new government, their own quest for self-survival will make them crush resistance on their own.

I'd give it about 2 years. Even one more invasion will probably stretch the military pretty thin. I'm totally supportive of anyone who becomes a Professional Soldier, I think you have to start being realistic at this point tho. The draft goes 20 year olds 18,19,21,22,23,24,25,26. Specialists can also be called to serve. I would serve in the military, but the chances of a need for Ukrainian Translators is minimal. I do not pass physicals due to an ear problem.

Why is everyone saying 'he wouldn't do it a second time' ?

Afghanistan was invaded under Clinton or what?

Iran would be the third country. There were no WMD in Afghanistan either, and US forces are stretched to breaking point in that country still, despite a Free (for all) and Fair(ly untrustworthy) Election (rigging) attempt.

It'll get to the stage where ear infections are ruled as being acceptable, along with a lot of other things that a peacetime army wouldn't accept. The US army is already damned thin on the ground.

they can get rid of that argument by pointing out that, in the heat of battle, no one can hear orders anyway, and orders are given through sign language.

I doubt it but anything is possible. I'd become a translator or JAG (Military Attorney) if it came down to that.
