Default Literacy Rates? What states have people who can read?

Anyone know of any place online to see what the literacy rates are in different places? I know I used to think that everyone could read and the idea of illiterate people was as quaint as the idea of a family making it by planting a small plot of land. Then I lived in the South.

Some places that are the worst here are, in random order : north carolina, south carolina, alabama, florida, kentucky, and some other states. Im not sure about those though, but thats what I was told.

You can search here by state, county, city, or congressional district. Couldn't find a chart.

yeah its pretty bad in some parts of kentucky especially in the southeastern part we also have one of the worst public education systems in the country for the most part except for in louisville where we have a pretty good public education system and the adult literacy rate is 95% and i can tell you most of the other 5% are either Mexican or Korean immigrants

'What' state refers to the state of a thing.

'Which' state refers to a place.

This wouldn't have anything to do with the No Child Left Behind policy thing would it? I'm pretty sure that the figures will show that, between the NCLB and Bush's inaugral speech, there has been precious little by way of improvement.

Actually the thread about Biloxi police who were bad at plant identification is what made me think of it.

Sorry, I didn't make the connection between the identifcation of deer food as opposed to cannibis and literacy skills. Silly of me!

I think of training as involving, among other things, books. Only I lived in that part of the world for a while and I met a large number of people who couldn't really read. Not because they were stupid. But it lead to them really missing certain pieces of information and making some kind of stupid-looking decisions.

Oh, I've come across that sort of thing too. I long hoped that people involved in such work - crime, military etc. etc. - would be expected to have full literacy skills, but now know that to be a rather fanciful wish.

Living here, New Mexico has a poor literacy rate. They should be dead last from the last time I checked which was about...3 months ago, if not one of the last.

Get me out of here *Cries*

I think it is more the quality of information that you are decrying. The mass media is notoriously biased towards one or the other prevalent political viewpoints in the country. People tend to make choices for visceral reasons. The imagery behind the message is more important thn the message itself. From what I perused, we still have a fairly high rate of literacy (Northeast is tops, south bottom) but a lack of critical thinking skills encouraged by soundbite media.

Baltimore has always had a pretty high literacy rate. IN fact, the city slogan for many years was "The City that Reads"

Of course, that saying has been twisted 100 different ways and now you are more likely to hear "the City that Bleeds" due to our high murder rate...or "The City that Breeds" due to our high teen pregnancy rate.
