yeah forget it, I forgot how bad unmoderated chat is.
Just hopped onto the yahoo chat website, The horror..

Another good thing about forum-based is that you seem to get less people pretending to be things they are not too
..and no people spamming "ASL???!?!??!?! oROFLlOL!!!"

Actually, I rescind that: make a chat. I need a place to be a complete and utter dick to people with no recourse for my actions.

Bad idea...I was not a fan of when it first came up and I'm not one now. No matter what is tried...spammers simply take over. It's leaving a door wide open for more problems than it's worth. I forgot who mentioned it but if people really want a chat room they can always set up their own...it's not like it's all that difficult. Just leave the info on a thread and if people want to participate they can join up. I'd support that more than something integrated here.

Plus with everyone having some sort of IM thing...it'd probably just be easier to use that.

We don't really put up with people being dicks for no good reason for very long. It's not really what we feel is appropriate interaction.

That would of course be a thread in the promo section and not the main board.

Understandable. Though in context of a chat run rampant with cyber addicts, spambots, and a variety of other miscreants, I don't imagine my being a dick would be too discernable. My point is that in that sort of environment, the festering of negativity is going to hit a point of supreme malevolence that borders on nigh-unto uncontrollable unless you shut it down. Since it seems that the chat is being talked down anyways, it doesn't really matter what I suggest, or how I frame it. I only see the chat as a bad idea, and if one did come about, I would feel inclined to jump on there and sling shit. On here, since I seem to be encountering intelligent conversation, I'll be a lot less inclined to act that way. I'm not really a troll, I just do battle like one. Call it hardening from my time on Portal of Evil.

I'm so use to just hitting the New Posts lil button I sorta forget their are multiple sections, but yes it would have to be in the right place. Better still only PM'ed to members who fit whatever criteria those who start it wish to employ.

PM spamming is bad. I don't want to get it and so I don't want it inflicted on members here. Promo section announcements are fine so long as they fit with the FAQ.

I appreciate your participation in intelligent conversation. I have no doubt that 95% of the people on this board are fully capable of being right witty brutal bastards in debate, if there were reason to bring the claws out, but I would much rather aim towards an active exchange of ideas from a more positive productive perspective. I want to know why it's fun to be creative and cool, why it's rewarding and entertaining. I don't want to get caught up in some kindergarten king of the hill bitchfest, for if you win in that environment, what have you truly gained?

Fair enough. I'll take that at its credit.

you could beat spamers and assholes by setting up locked room and giving permision only to those that you decide (approved people)

...yes and of course you could also set one up on a trial basis just to see how it would work out.

We did try it on another site and it was really a drag. We've got limited resources and some spammers have pretty unlimited resources. Wouldn't you rather we spent our time creating cool pictures and articles and making sure the boards run smoothly and that sort of thing.

Honestly I'm not that into chat rooms personally. I was asked on a radio interview today if the membership sites had chatrooms for GothicSluts.com or BarelyEvil.com had chatrooms and I couldn't remember the answer. Yes, I felt silly, but I guess that says where I am at on chatrooms.

I hear what your saying. When I got my first computer, I had no idea what chat rooms even were. I happened to be searching on one of my first attempts, and I landed into this site, called Gothic Radio. (Now gone) I met some of the nicest people in the world there. I found out later that most chat rooms are NOT like that. Thats too bad though, because this board has some very interesting people here, but I understand your reasonings for not wanting one.

I remember the Gothic Radio one. I've run accross a few nice chatrooms over the years, but they have indeed been few and far between. Plus, the chatroom spammers have gotten a lot more sophisticated since those days. I suspect that is why many of those services are no longer around. I am certain that people would get along well if we had one here, and I'm certain that with enough work and attention it could be done somewhat securely. However, a chatroom is not our top priority right now and I am not convinced that a chatroom wouldn't discourage more well reasoned discussion in the forum. Sometimes I am interested in what someone has to say and I like to be able to look at other threads they started or participated in, but with chat, it's all kinda gone, or left in such a mishmosh that it becomes incomprehensible. It would make me sad to see the thoughts and feelings of so many people washed away by chit-chat.

I also think that people consider what they are saying in a forum format more than they do in a chatroom. I don't tend to enjoy chatroom interaction as much. People just seem to make passes and want to 'cyber' all the time.
Stop being so fucking sexy, baby, and I'll stop asking to cyber.
