It wouldnt kill the boards, mostly because alot of people here are stroking their egos, and a forum setting guarantees that they can go back and look at how smart they are. Java based chat is fleeting.
I whole-heartedly support the idea.

One idea It would be kinda foolproof if you are not alowed to join chat before some amount of posts... I say 200+ posts

It would make all thing look like a VIP area.... Classes and stuff (Much more time you spend on internet and posting pointless posts, more you are important person)


P.S. I would vote for Morning Glory to be a chanell operator... that way it would be interesting with all those kicks and bans

We had a chat sort of feature on another site and it got spammed mercilously, like people actually set up bots or something to do it 24/7 and not just when the spamming scum were actually on the site. It was really stressfull and unpleasant.

There was one pretty funny thing that happened though. Forrest Black made a setting so that the name of this one site that was being spammed constantly started coming up as a dancing banana carrying an "I'm with stupid" sign Only these people were professional spammers, so they were not actually on the site. So they kept inputting stuff about the site they were spamming and really they were typing a dancing banana saying "I'm with stupid" over and over and over and over and over . . . only they didn't realize it because they were not actually looking at our site at the time. When they figured it out, the spammers actually had the gall to be steamed and their parent corporation got all pissy about it, even though they had not previously admitted that this supposedly indie site was theirs. That banana part was pretty funny though. That Forrest is a creative guy.

Thats pretty awesome. I dunno, I think it might be worth another shot. Maybe restrict it to approved members or to people with a certain post count?

Oh, yeah if a thing like that could be put in so only people registered for a certain amount of time and say, above 50 posts could log onto the chat, that might work. And if people try to say anything with "http", ".com" ".net" or "www" just replace it with nothing or stop the line of text being able to sent.

Not sure how hard or practical it would be to make though, but I imagine it could turn pretty cool if done right. There is a PHP chat project being made by some cool people at sourcefourge (link) which can be integrated to PHP forums (like this one I think), but it doesn't have any kind of "restricted access" chat stuff already built into it.

Oh, I'm certain I could handle the integration, I'm just not sure it's a good idea. I just have not seen a lot of great community sites with active entertaining chatrooms. I like reading what people have to say, but a lot of us don't have time to be on chat all day. I also think that people consider what they are saying in a forum format more than they do in a chatroom. I don't tend to enjoy chatroom interaction as much. People just seem to make passes and want to 'cyber' all the time.

I think blocking URLs would be a bad idea, unlessthere was a PM system integrated.
Its less abouthaving to follow it, and more about being able to go there to discuss, maybe brainstorm thread ideas.
