Do you smoke and love smokers?

I don't smoke. Just being around cig smoke makes me sick. Never was a smoker. Never will be a smoker. But I've found cig smoking kind of sexy every since I was a teenager.

Do you smoke? If not, do you find smokers tasty or icky? Then again, I know some smokers who find smoking gross, so another question: If so, do you find smokers tasty or icky?

I oppose smoking bans on principle, since they are at base fascist.

I've been smoking since that month I lived in Hong Kong with my brother-in-law's family. EVERYBODY smokes in Hong Kong.

Personally, I can go either way on watching people smoke. With some people it's kinda sexy, but with others it makes them look ridiculous.

As a rule, most guys who French-inhale look stupid but on an effeminate dandy type it just screams out for me to molest. Molest, molest, molest!

Of course, as far as smoking and health goes, there's a LOT of propaganda out there on both sides. The tobacco companies, naturally, want people to keep smoking so they had a bunch of crooked shit printed up fifty or so years ago. Then there's the fact that the stop-smoking-aid manufacturers are also selling a product that they want people to buy. In all honesty, all the medical studies that exist about poor health and smokers come to the conclusion that there is a minute connection -- but smoking, in total honesty, causes nothing.

People in the Orient (Far East, whatever -- I was raised by English WWII survivors) smoke a lot. Some statistics say that more cigarettes are sold in Japan, by ratio, than in the US -- so why does Japan have the highest national longevity? Part genetics, part lifestyle (including diet).

In short, the US is filled with a bunch of sedentary, stressed-out people who eat a lot of crap and are, coincidentally, genetically predisposed to cancer.

Oh yeah, clove cigarettes aren't any better or worse for people than "real cigarettes" are. In general, they're a much better quality cigarette but they have the same health-effects/connections as any other cigarette. Over 75% of the cigarettes sold in Indonesia (where clove cigarettes originated) are clove cigarettes and the cancer-rate is comparable to any other country in the far East with a considerable smoking population who smokes regular cigarettes. R J Reynolds backed up the ban on clove cigarettes in Utah and New Mexico -- the company had every reason to, they want to sell more of their own product.

Didn't know they were banned in New Mexico either though. Guess that whole nonsmoking thing keeps me out of the loop on the details. Are they banned for being theoretically worse for people? I know I get sicker from second-hand smoke with them, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything for people overall.

If they do or did, I sure as hell don't know about it. But then again, American tobacco companies have had horrible luck with trying to make clove cigarettes -- Nat Sherman's Touch of Clove line is nasty in flavour but I suspect it's because they lieft out the key ingrediant to the Indonesian brands, being an oil of clove and other spices ("other spices" vary, depending on the brand, specific line and grade -- the true Indonesian clove cigarettes, which are available online, have a much better oil-blend than the ones you normally get in the states).

Allegdly, they're a bigger health-threat. In reality, the smell gets to a lot of people worse than regular cigarettes and as far as I can tell (from studies and personal observation) a lot of white people seem to be alergic to them. Of course, a lot of white people are also allergic to seafood, but we aren't seeing bans on selling that any time too soon.

I dunno, this whole quitting-smoking thing puzzles me.

I'm of the mind-set that I smoke because I want to. I want to smoke because it's a quicker way for me to de-stress than meditation and an easier-on-my-body "quick cure" for my headaches than any over-the-counter medications I've tried. I'm not sure if anybody else has noticed or not, but the price of OTC headache-medication seems to have soared since the US decided to quit smoking! Hrmm... $4 pack of cigarettes or a $7 box of Aleve?

I've personally gone for several stretches of months at a time without a cigarette -- and only once was it out of necessity (as in, I had no money). The other four of five times (longest was nearly ten months!) was just because I didn't feel like smoking.

One friend of mine decided that he was going to quit smoking very late in 2003 and hasn't picked up a cigarette since -- and he was very surprised to see how much of it was mind-over-matter.

Personally, I don't care if this rant offends anybody. Clinical studies have proven that the physical "addiction" to nicotine is erased after two weeks. After than, it's nothing more than mental addiction -- and if you can overcome the mental addiction forst, it's easier to overcome the physical. That's a fact.

Wow this is a loaded question for me. Smokers individually are just like anyone else, and they are as lovable as any human can be. But I cannot stand the act, the decision, of smoking. I've had severe asthma for most of my life. I've recently found new emphysema-like developments (i.e. growths) in my lungs. I'm 26 and never smoked a day in my life! So I am being tested on what is wrong with me (most of which involves a needle). I may have to have parts of my lung removed this summer; surgery is pending.

Needless to say, a perfectly healthy person with perfectly healthy lungs who would consciously ruin their healthy lungs with carcinogens makes me sad -- and I don't mean I pity them-- because they can quit, but it makes me sad that if they don't quit in 30 years, they'll be in my shoes.

If there's anything I can do to prevent people from possibly giving themselves emphysema or other health problems I would. If I could have done something to stop my condition from happening, I would (but even my doctors don't know what's wrong). I hate the pain & worry I am causing my parents, my partner, everyone I know-- because of my condition.

And I can say that lung problems really suck.
