What EXACTLY is so scary about clowns....

okay aside from pennywise,pogo, and the doll from poltergeist...what is so scary about clowns?

I have never gotten this fear of clowns. i think they're funny! I love a good hobo or whiteface anyday...especially the white faces. those ones are just pimp when the makeup is done just right and the costume works out. so what is it that's so scary about clowns? someone please explain it to me?

I don't really think there are that many people who are truly afraid of clowns, I believe a lot of people pretend to be afraid. It must be in fashion to hate clowns? It's funny to me. In fact the last birthday I did, the 5yr old cried for like five minutes, but I did a magic trick and after that she thought I was the coolest mother-fucker ever. All kids under a certain age are scared of big costumed people (Mickey mouse and those other pussies).

Although I must say that clowns are rarely shown in a positive light in the media. That may have something to do with popular thought.

I was thinking about it, and I've heard people say the thing that irritates them the most is the artificial happiness painted on clowns faces and how they act. That is simply not true. I've had some stern words with a few youngsters who were fucking my gig up, who I know I scared. Last summer I was working this small street festival and I had been making balloon animals and shit for almost 2 hours (no break), just getting mobed by these kids. The whole time this one little kid was heckling me. I can deal with that just fine, I generally just dish it back out, but this fucker would not let up. He tried to grab my helium tank and I also caught him trying to get in my bag. I tried looking for his parents the whole time mind you, but I guess I was the new baby-sitter. So the last straw was when I bent over to grab a handfull of balloon when he grabed my hat, pulled it off my head and then let it snap back. I totally lost it. I droped all my shit, lunged at him grabbed him by the arm and got right in his face and threated him. When I let him go he got the fuck out of my face and I did'nt see him again. I went on break and went and had a beer.

i was never really afraid of actual clowns.
i was terrified of my grandmas porcilin clowns cuz the bedroom i stayed in at her house was full of them. there was only one small window in the room and when i woke up in the middle of the night the moon would like up half of all the clowns faces. it was not a good image at five.
i was also terrified of the clown my mom put in my room. it was on a swing at the end of my bed and i could swear it stared at me all night. i would put it in my closet every morning and when i came back home after school it would be back up there (thanks ma), so i thought i moved by itself.

i dont know i think my brother used to be though but im not sure if that stemmed from watching it when he was really young. I went to one circus when i was i duno about 10 and i found them irratting rather painful to watch and predictable rather than amusing or scary but then i think ive always been a bit cynical i suppose. I thought that they were a bit urm victorian (or maybe it was a victorian circus i cant remember) and maybe thats why people like to pretend to be scared of them i think the same applies to the fear of spiders it always been cool to be afraid of spiders. Its also fashinoble to be scared of heigts but i am actually terrified pf heights i cant physically go within a hundred feet o the edge of a height cause i think that i am going to trip and do a triple somersault of the edge the plunge to my horrible bloody death

youre a whiteface right? probably not the correct term. theres sad ones too. I still dont understand it. clowns are the fucking shit! a good example, kiss. the crow. alice cooper. all their faces? based after pantemime (especially cooper and the crow) and people aint all the way freaked by them.

Your totally right. There are a few different types of clowns. I don't think most people are quite as observant. I do play a traditional whiteface, I don't act silly or outrageous. It's not my style. I just do magic, juggle and balloons. I don't really talk much.
I agree with Amelia that most clowns aren't funny. Fuck, I went to the Carson&Barnes Circus on Monday and the clowns working that circus were the WORST I've ever seen. It was more embarrassing that funny.

Clowns really aren't scary, it's more of a fashion thing to say that you're scared of them. I find that clowns are usually more scared of me than the other way round, but I did once meet a very nice clown a few years back who let me have a donkey ride . . . (on a donkey, as in that animal with long ears and a big head and walk on all fours eating grass, maybe I should shut up now)

I think mimes are the shit! I wanted to be a mime a long time ago becaue, believe it or not....I actually can go more than five minutes without talking...lol and yeh, toes...I know a little about clowns because I used to be a dragqueen which is kind of a hidden version of a clown..think about it...elaborate costumes and make up, wigs....big shiny shoes....water filled balloons....yeh....and a larger than life persona (plays circus music)

dragqueens are just a step next to clowns.

So no one's seen Killer Klowns from Outer Space? Those are the only scary clowns I've ever seen. Other than that, clowns don't scare me, and they don't really make me laugh either. The Porn Clown Posse sound fun though. I've seen them in action at a street fair here in SF.
