Default The bar vs the church

In a small conservative town, a bar/tavern owner started to build a
new bar to open up for business. A local church started a campaign to
block the bar from opening with petitions and prayers.

Work progressed, however, right up till the week before opening, when
a lightning strike hit the bar and it burned to the ground.

The church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, until
the bar owner sued the church on the grounds that the church was
ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through
direct or indirect actions or means.

The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to
the building's demise in its reply to the court.

As the case made it's way through the legal system, the judge looked
over the paperwork at the hearing and observed, "I don't know how I'm
going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a
bar owner that believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church
    congregation that doesn't!"

Would have to run that by a lawyer friend of mine here, and see what he thinks of the notion. However, will have to wait until he returns from a business trip to Europe to do that.

Probably wouldn't fly, but who knows????

Reminds me of something that Raoul Rigault, the de facto chief of police during the Paris Commune of 1871, and generally an pretty nasty piece of work, in response to a priest, whom he had had arrested and was interrogating, that he was a servant of God, who was everywhere.

Rigault supposedly said to his assistant standing nearby that such and such described his occupation as being a servant to one God, "a vagrant.".

Pretty funny remark from an individual who was otherwise rather grim, especially as he could be said to be a 19th Century forerunner to the heads of such organisations as the Cheka/OGPU/NKVD/KGB and the Gestapo, among others.
