i'm not saying that I am going to automatically blow people off because they want to come up to me and talk about something that is apparently obvious that I'm into ... but I also don't want that to be my sole measure of what a relationship, even a five second one, could be about. It goes back to what I said in the DMV thread about how there are things that we do, and then there is the people that we are. One of them is You, the other is just stuff that might be great, but ultimately it is just interchangable.

like ok, stick with the tattoos example. what that means to me is the personal connections or experience in the symbol, and that is what matters, not really what the actual design is. and even if that meaning is just that I thought it would be really cool to get something because I liked the way it looks, it still doesn't matter, because you can't tell that just by looking at it. it's a personal thing.

I dunno how accurately and completely you shared that remark with us, but I wouldn't say that "oh, you are wearing your shirt like so-and-so." implies that they've made up their mind about who invented it and are accusing you of immitation.
