You remind me of a very dear friend of mine who was opposing everyone in any way he could. He is very smart and clever guy and he loved to debate. But most of all he loved to prove other's that they're wrong. He gets his kick out of it. And he would not stop until he makes the other person feel miserable, pretty much in a sadistic manner. Even he was so smart he could not realize what he was doing and eventually most of his friends abandoned him. He ended up alone. :/
It's always easier for the person watching to see things clear than for the person who's doing it.

Btw, hurting people you love is pure human nature. As more you love them the more you hurt them. If you evolve out of that self centered image then you're getting somewhere

I'm a lot like that, although less persistent about humiliating people these days. I find now that in the big picture, ceaselessly driving home the point of my supposed 'intellectual victories' isn't all that entertaining anymore, and in fact rather unbecoming. Dragged out debate should be saved for people that keep up well enough to make points of their own.

An amusing thing to note that despite the fact that I was (and am) quite content viewing myself as fundamentally 'alone', confrontation actually proved to be a very neat way of attracting the attention of the valuable few that did see things my way. I don't think I would warn anyone against this behaviour on that account, at least.

Anyway, despite my sociopathic tendencies, I'm really not that keen on the 'hurt the ones you love' thing - outside of the physical, sadomasochistic sense I was refering to earlier. I find that not easily getting upset oneself helps a lot in not escalating things that more empathatic people might have gotten burried under. Although a basic sense of when to say something nice about people other than reasserting it at times it is being contradicted probably wouldn't hurt me.
