What were some of the things you wanted to be when you grew up? To what extent are those turning out to be related to the things you are actually doing?

I wanted to be a musician and actor: I'm a software developer.
I wanted to be a paleontologist. Now I cut hair and make sex toys. Pretty sure the divergence is too great for there to be any relation.
I wanted to be a hit man, or an assassin.
I grew up to be way weirder, and cooler than I thought possible though.
Sure I don't get to kill people for a living, but then again my employers don't usually try to have me killed to ensure my silence either. So I guess there are trade offs to everything.
I wanted to be a soldier. Now I am. I'm misserable. Hopefully someone invents a working time machine soon so I can go back in time, slap my kid-self upside the head, tell him to turn off the war movies and go learn to play the fucking guitar or something.
I wanted to be a Geologist/Archeologist, Actress/Painter with two daughters and a stay-at-home husband.
I still want to be an Anthropologist/Archeologist, but that's mostly died down to watching/arguing with the History Channel.
I gave up on acting because my skin was too thin, I was too fat, and I got lost in a small town without alot of movie business around... and an utter lack of desire to get caught up in community theatre again.
I still paint. I don't, and never really had any desire to DO anything with it. I suppose it would be fun to be the darling of the art world for a few, but I think I'd ultimately hate the people buying my art, and being a 'trend' would be pretty uncomfortable.
My freshman year in HS I wrote an essay about how I wanted to do porn for the mere fact that when I became a slightly famous singer, it would throw me into the tabloids forever (Mind you, this was about the time of the Pam/Tommy Lee sex tape, so my logic was sound)... I got into doing photos and videos for websites and haven't turned back since....
I still plan on making an album on of these days....
I wanted to do something with animals and now im a porn star! Fortunatly, I dont mix the two! lol
I still plan to own my own exotic pet shop and rescue centre some day.
car design. the exterior stuff. one of my friends had that dream job.
Think it was a bodyguard first, then a history teacher, then an EMT, then my first year of college a police officer. Stuck with the police officer for the last 3 years .
Ninja and astronaut
Wizard Detective is still up there too though.
Rich. Am I anywhere close? No.
Seriously, I still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up and I'm 32. Just happy I guess, with whatever I'm doing.
I wanted to be a doktor, then a soldier... was a green beret for 20 years... became an actor for 10 minutes after that, got my SAG card then realized most actors are trained monkeys... now i'm back on track for Doktor... second career... 2 more years of pre-med.... i wish i could ride motorcycles for a living
Being a doctor is a hard school. Specially when you're older. Good luck with it!
If you got 2 more years in pre-med then you have like 5 years after that to be a doctor. Am I right? I don't know how it works there.
at Duke it's 4 years med school (1 in classroom and 3 hands-on) and then 2 years of ER residency... but after that its 4 12 hour shifts a week and excellent pay and benefitsOriginally Posted by OliX

I wanted to make music. So, I do. Just not known enough though :|
But one day! ;D
lot's of things...........antichrist was one of them

I can't take good criticism. I also can't draw. Or sew..straight. I also seem to fail at dinners 90% of the time. I also can't seem to return my damn netflix movie i've had since November.
When I was a little kid I wanted to be a dinosaur, then a shark, then I realized it was hard find anyone to pay me to be a dinosaur or shark...so I got a bit older and worked as a park naturalist, and also at the zoo, then I went to college to be a Wildlife Biologist. The wild life got the better of me and I worked as a corrections officer (don't do it, jail sucks). and later as a street cop. If you know anyone hiring sharks or dinosaurs I am willing to change career fields and terrorize beach-goers really cheap!!!
So how's being a cop compare to doing corrections?Originally Posted by thegreendevil76

I wanted to be an exotic dancer and model. I am both.

Nothing will convince you of the necessity of expanding the death penalty to include many misdemeanor offenses like working in a jail (did I mention it sucks in jail?).

I am now a Front Office Manager in a nice hotel. Which blows because I am on call 24/7 and have to deal with crazy shit. You would not believe what people will do in hotels. I find that the business men are the nastiest people ever. I don't even want to go into the stupidity of people.
Hotel work is pretty crazy. I end up staring at people blankly from behind my desk half the time. I think staying in a Hotel makes a tourists IQ drop from half to close to zero.Originally Posted by Chiqadee

I wanted to be a film director. The only good films schools were and are super expensive(The closest one to me at the time, being NYU). Couldn't get any scholarships because my dad made too much money. He was a L.I. cop (yeah..Those guys made millions---I'm being sarcastic here). I possibly could have gotten a college loan, but I figured I'd be paying it off up until the time I died. So my dream died too......
I used to work as a housekeeper in a hotel. I know what your talking about. You couldn't pay me enough to do that job again.Originally Posted by Chiqadee
I was a dishwasher/cook/server (restaurant and banquet)/bus boy (again, restaurant and banquet)/banquet room setup guy/occasional housekeeper. I know your pain. My hometown has this Wizard of Oz Festival for some reason they have the original midgets make appearances. Those old little people trashed their hotel rooms and rang up rediculous amounts of alcohol tabs on room service. I got stuck with the mess.
I've always wanted to put together parties and after Spring is over I'll officially be certified to plan and coordinate events in my city. I've always wanted to bring people together so I feel like I will definitely fulfilling a lot of life goals, including the fact that I'm still young in comparison to most people in this business.
One of my closest friends is the housekeeping manager and she always calls me to let me know about the crazy shit. We do charge for any damage or excess cleaning that we have to do. Like if we have to shampoo the carpet or send the bed spread to the dry cleaner. I have a weak stomach. I could never do her job. She has OCD, which makes her damn good at her job.Originally Posted by mystoo
I wanted to be a writer from the time I could read. As my father was a best-selling author in his (limited) spare time from practicing law, this seemed like a reasonable goal to me. Then my dad told me some Ben Franklin quote about freedom of the press for he who owns one. So then I wanted to be a publisher too.
Be careful what you wish for.
A pirate. So far I've gotten as far as wearing a bunch of stuff with skulls and bones on it and gaining a solid disrespect for national law.
THAT is fascinating.Originally Posted by Amelia G
