Default who here has read the bible?

I've been studying the history of the isrealites, as well as historical language application (hebrew, greek) lately, and actually I haven't yet read it. I guess I should see what it has to say on the subject. I'm not really looking for a theological debate, I was just wondering who may have an intrest in it for whatever reasons, and has taken the time to read up on it. old or new testament, or both, whichever.

that's cool, I guess I shouldn't say that I have never read it, because I have read parts of it, just not as a whole volume, or really the books in themselves. and in what I have read I've allready been getting different impressions based on different versions. I guess I should learn how to read greek, eh?

I read it fairly often, and tend to take a flick through every now and again.
Cover to cover? Four, maybe five times. It's an excellent book in it's own right, let alone as the holy book I feel it to be.

I started, but it's not my thing. It's pretty dense, and there's nothing I can follow. Bleah.

I'm waiting for a good translation of the septuagint from the original greek. I've read a fair portion of the King James Bible.

did you really think that or are you just saying that to offend religous people? it's not very well written and it doesn't have much of a plot, I find it really hard to believe that anyone finds it interesting as a narrative.

i saw a guy on tv who said something that i will always remember. to understand the bible properly you got to study the history of the area at that time.

Has anyone here read the Koran? try that next, there are english language versions available.

I was interested in that, but um.. i'll put it frankly, there isn't much speculation about the history of 10th century mid east. we have a lot of secular credible sources to back that stuff up. so although I do want to read it, it's not as important to historical understanding.

ive read it at least 10 times cover to cover in my life... it has many great moral tales. not to mention the historical record it gives of the history of that particular corner of the world in early times.

yes, i really think that. if i were trying to offend i would attack the "teachings" therein. fact is, i found some parts entertaining, some parts boring, and no part that really held any weight for me.

Now here's a question: Has any one read the dead sea scrolls? The books that didn't make it into the bible, like some 14 years on Jesus's life and a bunch of other stuff. And the Apocrypha, any one read those?

Dead sea scrolls no...Apocrypha, yes. It's an interesting series of books, testaments, and what have you. It's still highly debated as to why some never made the "final cut" as it where since a few were part of church doctrine for quite some time...but all that may have to do with current events of its age. Some cuts seem to have more to do with social reasons than religious ones...espcecially those elements dealing with Mary (both of them) and the book of enoch.

Great reads no matter the context in which they are placed really.

Uhhhh... tjhe dead sea scrolls don't feature anything about Jesus; it's the Apocrypha which feature the other stories of his life. In fact, the Dead Sea Scrolls are FIRMLY old testament, and yes, I've read both. Lots.

I even have a folderfull I keep with my bible of printoffs from the dead sea scrolls, as I consider them equally holy.

Yeah I know. I was typing with both eyes on the TV and only one hand on the computer, IE distracted. So I got it a little mixed up all the words are there.
