In your opinion is who?
I would choose David J.
I picked him for the variety of styles he writes. The lyrics and compositions. Also, He has TONS of really good songs.

Stephen Lynch, no contest!
define contemporary
not really sure what contemporary is
Present day, current, modern...any of these ringin' a bell?
I guess I dont care who writes the songs, but ig the cd's good I'll actually buy it
Start's singing Goldfinger's "Spokesman"
Yes! you rock rockwulf. I was actually just listening to that album the other day.
Yeah, I really don't know quit how to define this, to me a song writer sounds like someone that writes and performs all their own songs, sort of like bob dylan and James taylor or yesteryear. usually I think of an acoustic musician because it's kind of hard for one person to play on their own in any other style, even with accompaniment. I guess sort of the modern day type would be trent reznor. I suppose I have some respect for him, but I'm not really into his music and I wouldn't have him the greatest.
My list would have to include:
Elliot Smith
Conor Oberst
Mike Park
Chris "Sandman" Sands
and my favorite would have to be Jeff Ott, although he stopped touring and making cds because he doesn't want to use petroleum products, which is also why I have the most respect for him.
I would say contemporary is someone who is still alive & performing.
Barry Manilow....
is a total pussy
Robert Gass (On Wings Of Song)
Randy Edleman
Jon Oliva (Trans-Siberian Orchestra)
nobody shoot me, but Dani Filth (i'm a sucker for complex language)
in a close second, i absolutely delight in the overly optimistic and fantasy-laden lyrics of both Hansi Kirsch (blind guardian) and Matt Barlow (iced earth)
oh yeah and I'll add that guy from Neurosis, I forgot how much I like them, but I don't think they put out any new stuff in awhile... ugh.. whatever. the 90's was pretty good. haha.
Leonard Cohen or Nick Cave
