What are your top five songs you love which you can make a case for being gothic songs?

    Bela Lugosi's Dead, Bauhaus

I think Bauhaus in general has that, outsider punky kind of vibe that could easily assosiate it with Goth. However, in particularly this one, being that its about the very charming Bela Lugosi, who played Dracula. We've got Vampires, Horror Movies, and what was at the time, a faintly esoteric reference to a near-forgotten actor.

    Burn, The Cure

Its electronic, its ambient, it was written for 'The Crow' soundtrack, and Robert Smith. Lets not forget the Robert Smith.

    Personal Jesus, Depeche Mode

To me, its a classic because of its, tripping, slightly off-kilter vibe that mingles with a throbbing backbeat. It creates tension, and at the same time, its a winner in dance mixes. It also has that almost 'ugly' sound to it that makes a classic goth winner.

How soon is now, The Smiths

This one has that distinctive Minor Key to it, and its one of The Smith's songs that takes off from that minor keyed near-pleasant sounding-pop vibe and goes into a dark, electronic feel that just sounds like trouble.

Sweet Dreams (are made of these), Eurythmics

I think the Eurythmics not being particularly Goth is utterly beside the point. Its got that droning beat, the flat spoken vocals, BDSM undertones, and high melodic beautiful moments all thrown in a garbage disposal to make a song that somehow works. Its... dark imaginings kind of music.

Don't Fear the Reaper, Blue Oyster Cult

I think the pretty, minor melody line, the haunting harmonies, and the theme of exploring something normally not disscussed (in this case, dealing with death) make this one that, if it isn't considered to be classic Goth, really should be.

Since Goth wasn't even around when those songs were created can you call them "Goth" songs?

AK, When exactly did you think the whole 'goth' thing started?
    I'm thinking late 70's early 80's...maybe sooner?

I saw none of it until the very late 80's. Before that it was just "alternative" kids and none of them dressed entirely in black clothes and also didn't have the goth mindset of "everything sucks"and this idea of "darkness" and didn't even know what a Wicca was. A perfect example of alternative was Molly Ringwald's character in "Pretty in Pink". Alternative kids lived and died at the thrift stores...Not Hot Topic. Alternative kids actually had lots of fun and were not depressed and didn't have a drop of emo blood in them. I hung out with alot of them back then and we always had great times. I know I'm stereotyping Goths here, but that stereotype is how people see them and how they're viewed by the media.

I was listening to David Bowie all day and I watched Pink Floyd's The Wall rock opera for breakfast.
If any of those can be goth then I put them on the list. Specially Space Oddity from David Bowie

not really goth, more like a spoof of a goth song, but Ninja Death Squad's "Bela Lugosi Is Gay" always cracks me up.

I think it's "People Who Died". By Mr. "Basketball Diaries" himself. Great song.

Goth has been around a lot longer than any of us... it just had different names... i had "Goth" friends in the late 70's... they were there in the 50s and 60 as far as i'm concerned... what about the Victorian Times... Gothic Literature... Vampire Stories etc... Goth has just become a lame label for a certain type of person now...

    eyeliner... Goth or Emo...

hell in the mid-80s eyeliner was new-wave and duran duran-ish... maybe it was Mod...

not to be confused with Mods from the 60s who wore suits and thin ties as a counter culture statement against the hippies (think Quadrophenia and Vespas with lots of mirrors and coon tails)... in highschool in california the Mods were the pre-cursor to today's goths babygoths and emo's... and didn't wear suits... except sometimes...

    im so confused...

who needs labels anyway... unless you have an online store and are looking to attract customers of a certain type

I asked "Can you call them "Goth" songs?"....Not, don't dare you.

I'm just confused as to calling a classic song "Goth" before the lifestyle ever really arrived.

I grew up in NY. Alot of my friends listened to O.M.D., The Smiths, The Cure, Erasure, Sousxie and the Banshees, Love and Rockets, Depeche Mode ect. Not one of them dressed all in black and not any of them ever had even heard of the term "Goth". They were called "alternative" which I think was orginally brought on, at the time, because they all listened to "college" radio...Which was seen as an alternative to regular radio. Now alternative just all seems like a mainstream label that lumps a bunch of different kinds of music styles into one category.

I guess that's because I forget that the whole thing started in Europe and didn't really hit here as a "genre" until later on....

I don't possibly see how you can be confused unless you are a spaceman that has just arrived from 1980. I can see how you could proclaim me wrong in my tastes, but listen here kiddo... its 2008 and these songs have been adopted and embraced by people who either had friends in, or where once Alternative kids that have, since 1994, been swept into this "Goth" thing.

This is what the "We weren't Goths back in the day" Thing sounds like to me now:

Do you like Poe? HA! How can you call that Goth. There was no Goth then! Just a genera called "Gothic Literature"! So ha!

What about Coffins? You like those! Those aren't goth, those are for Dead People!

Old Horror Films? HA! Some people not Goth like those. Some people not even goth like those. Love those. Watch them all the time!

Plus, there are alot of not Goth people that wear black. So its not really a Goth thing either is it? How can anyone claim anything is Goth?

Back in the day I was a toddler, and we all ate mud pies. None of us even claimed to be Goth then.

I understand your dusty argument, but its just aside from any point in the universe. Disagree with my taste, do whatever, but I stand by my personal thought that the songs I picked out are in the Musical genera of Classic Goth without any doubt in my little mind.

Fuck! I can't believe I screwed up like that and you figured me out :Goes back to mothership:

It wasn't an argument. It was more like a question. Chill. And if you see what I posted to Helcyon I did mention that he is right about how long ago "Goth" was decribed as a musical genre. I just forgot about that it was popular in England long before it became popular in the states. I also didn't mean to make it sound like I was picking on you. Sorry. Alot of people of here mentioned songs from the 70's and 80's. I was questioning the whole thing. Not just you.
