    Default Favorite comic books?

So what are your favorite comic books of all time?

I've got a few boxes of bagged and board-backed books I have not opened in years, but back in the day I especially enjoyed The Crow, Badger, Nexus, Ronin, and a host of other books. Storyline was always really important to me, so there were some artists I loved but whose specific books were never totally my thing because of storyline. What I'd put on the wall and what I'd read were not particularly related. My wall currently sports original work by James O'Barr and Larry Welz come to think of it. Make of that what you will.

Alan Moore's Watchmen ruined comics for me though because it was such a perfect work that it seemed like nothing afterwards could ever equal it.

For me story is key. Without it I tend to pass over anything and everything. It seems I'm not the samed cause all the slick art of the last few years seems to just keep killing comics. As much as art dominates the artform it is not the only factor in it's success. So for me the key comics that I look back on when I'm working on my own are:

    Zot
    Preacher
Masamune Shirow's Tank Police and Ghost in the Shell work
Milo Manara's various Guiseppe Bergman stories
Hellblazer (up untill Ennis & Dillon left, then it became sub par and inconsistent. It hit a few points of life in recent years but none ever felt like the Johnny C we all knew from way back)

and above countless others I should mention...

EC Comics and their various Horror and Crime anthologies. Those are my bibles and great loves. The stories, characters, and art have no equal and always creep me out. Call them by the number morality plays or fiction for the Twilight Zone crowd...it's miles ahead of most "Legit Lit" and better than anything Grant Morrison ever wrote or will ever write.

    Transmetropolitan
    Grendel
    Blade of the Immortal
    D.C Comic's Anarky
    Cerebus
    Queen and Country
umm... I know there's more but I'm bad at listing things.

Pretty much anything by Frank Miller is worth getting....I can't wait for the Sin City movie to come out.

Right now, Slave Labor are publishing some excellent stuff, especially 'Little Scrowlie' which is my favourite book on the stands right now. Check it out if you get the chance

I love Hellboy too, but only when Mignola's doing it....

I usually just pick up weird indie/small press/ b&w stuff nowadays....Marvel and co. have just lost me over the last couple of years .

yeah, I hate marvel they are such cocksuckers, and for the last two or three years because of some dispute with san diego, they have refused to attend the comic book convention, letting petty personal politics completley alienate thier fan base.

I first got hooked on Evil Ernie, then moved on to Dawn. ( I then won a "dawn look alike contest" befriended Joseph Linsner, and modeled for future Dawn art...woohoo!) Of course the slave labor comics are a fav. I have a Johnny tat on my R shoulder, and 2 dawn tats.
My dream in life is to make a comic one day, if only I can find the motivation, and partner that wont flake out.

Gilbert Shelton's Motoring Tips are excellent, too. his obsession with the Citroen 2CV (pronounced "Shit-rain Duh-shuh-vo") is tragic and comic at the same time.

i really wish Phil Foglio hadn't decided to do trading cards instead of XXXenophile. sigh.

After having more years to think about this...and the fact that it seems jim starlin may have finished the story, I find I quite like the whole Thanos Infinty storyline.....

and still read Lucifer and hellblazer...even in their rebooted books
