    Default Goth Fashion Show

I'm incredibly stoked that I will be shooting posed portfolio as well as candid photos backstage at a Goth fashion show called Emerging Illusions tomorrow. But, I'm all anxious and being pessimistic and keep thinking I'm going to do something terrible that is going to make me a pariah.

I can use some helpful hints to make it more fun and less stressful for me, since I know I'll take better pictures when I'm more relaxed.

And, yes, I will post some pictures.

"Film is cheap" used to be the motto, and it's even more true now we're in digi.

Unless you're shooting a shuttle launch you've got masses of time to play with, and you can rattle off thousands of frames - the client wants maybe 1% of those in return, and that's a success rate anyone can aim for! Newbies tend to spend far too long thinking about a shot and composing it, then find their one frame is out on a technicality. Pros run a roll on each attempt and save a few percent - in your case not only does it make the process less stressful, you get more opportunity to see what made the good ones good. I'm not saying to spend the day on motor-drive, but for a posed session there's a good reason studio flash recharges in under two seconds. The same goes for candids - a lot of the time if you're new to the game you'll only find the good shots back at home when some quirky combo of people and background 'works', and until you get a feel for how to make that happen, just fish for it. Big net better than small hook.

Also, if your models are experienced then let them play - if they're any good they should have a feel for what makes them look good, and sure "look sexy" is too vague, but if you're telling them the angle of each finger joint you'll lose any hope of a right-sided smile. Same goes for you - once you know the general setup is OK and you're getting exposure and focus, don't stand there peering into the LCD and muttering to yourself like you're defusing a claymore - people look happy when they hear something funny, not when the guy taking their photo is crying.

and if all else fails, wear the "smile or I'll show you my wiener" t-shirt.

Yes I agree. Take LOTS of photos, during, before and after the show. Maybe take some of your favorite models and do extra shots of them. The more photos you take, the more chance you have of taking a GREAT photo.

Be aware of the lighting and background and try to make it nice... MAKE IT NICE!

I thought that inviting the models over to my house for a party, then telling them that I want to take pics of them cleaning my house was always a fun thing to do... It is also the best to way to us a Hooker.

I have shirt that says 'Ask me to flash you'.

Everyone, thanks for the suggestions. Plus, I needed a good smile to start the day (therapist t-shirt). I just need to keep remembering not to overthink this and have fun. I usually do my best in my creative pursuits (photography, acting, filmmaking) when I do this.

HK - I will post more once I get to cropping them and editing them. The ones above were just quick edits so I could put something up. And I kind of wish I had a video of the model sleeping on the floor. People were just stepping over her trying not to wake her up. She only lay there for about 10-15 minutes, though.

Lady Alias - It was a blast. I'm kinda upset that I was backstage doing the posed photos during the show. But the organizer said she might get me a copy of the video they shot of the show or have a screening of it.

DM - I'm not certain what it is about that shot, but a lot of people really seem to like that one. I like it too.

    Voltaire - Why thank you.

Is it just me or does the model in the 4th posed image look like Kate Winslet?

That looks like really cool stuff. I love a lot of the rough textures and you captured them really well.

    Thanks Forrest.

Someone a few weeks ago was commenting about my photographs being very textural. I know it's not something I'm conciously shooting for, but I guess it does end up in a bunch of my images. Not that I'm complaining.

Since it's been taking me much longer than anitcipated to edit the photos from the fashion show, here is the link to the page of them.

    http://homepage.mac.com/cluelessmorg...toAlbum22.html

The ones I've edited are marked as edited (duh!) Comments and critiques are always welcome.

The reason for the delay is trying to complete my short for my video production class. Filming is done, but logging and capturing the footage before I can edit is giving me fits. I don't know if it's my camera or my old computers, but I've not had this problem before.
