    Default Minute of Nerdiness

Basically, you take a minute to explain something obscure that you go into orgasmic nerdy convulsions over. Something most people haven't heard of.

    Here's mine.

Dwarf Fortress. Basically, you make an outpost/fortress. You can build, dig rooms out, trade, all sorts of things. ALOT of things. SO MANY FUCKING THINGS. I've been playing non-stop for like, 2 days, and I haven't even scratched the surface.

The thing that make's it obscure, is the graphics, and the gameplay. The graphics use... well, here.

    See?

And the gameplay... Steeeep learning curve. Extremely steep. Like, "HOLY CRAP WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?!" when you're trying to figure out the most simple task, like building something.

Anyway, what's your Minute of Nerdiness?

Let me tell you something that can happen in this game.

It is one of the most simple things that can happen.

I havn't had it happen, but I'm sure it will soon.

Your miner dwarves simultaneously hit a magma vein, and an underground lake. Both of these fluids gush out, drowning out and burning any dwarfs caught in their path.

They go into any and all holes you've dug, flushing out everyone.

You have a few surviving dwarves, and decide to go on. You go back into your fortress, only there are CARP everywhere. VICIOUS MAN EATING CARP. They attack your dwarves, and rip their limbs and devour their bodies till all that's left is dwarf chunks.

    Remember, CARP did this.

    Remember: "Losing is fun!"

Well, would you rather eat gnawed up, torn up chunks of a dirty underground dwarf, or would you rather fuck said chunks?

So, I just downloaded this game. Like I need more distraction and reason to procrastinate from things I need to do than I already have.

Oh... If you did, you'll want these two things.

    http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/~mayday/upload/df.htm for better graphics
    and
http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/i...first_fortress for learning how to play. Trust me when I say you will NEED this. The rest of the wiki is a great help too.

Feel free me pm me to ask about how to do anything.

Why is it that ASCII games are funnier than anything else?

People should be remaking strange shit like this instead of 'classics' and sequels that have the same gameplay as all the games before them...

While we're on the topic of games, Liero gets me hot.

It's kinda like worms in real-time, with basically no graphics at all. Nothing but dirt-coloured pixels everywhere...

But it's awesome because you can set the reload rate of the weapons to 0, and they all fire like machine-guns.

If you use a weapon with enough recoil, you can simply aim down and hold down fire to fly around the screen.

    Yeah, I'll nerd-out for that.

(Almost forgot to mention: this thread is full of lol.)

ASCII games are made of awesome, because the Maker[s] focus on Gameplay and Fun, not graphics.

Also, Liero is all sorts of HOLYFUCKINGTASTICAWESOMEPANTSNESS. Give or take.

Every thread I seem to make, no matter where I go, seems to devolve into off-topic hilarity...

    I'm so proud.

Maybe off-topic hilarity is in your DNA?

I suggest you donate your body to science so we can clone the hilarity gene and inject it into lame people.

i saw this thread and was struck by the moment. i give you the Geek's Prayer.

May the Force be with you. And also with you.
    Let us pray.
Our father, who art blue and glowey Azathoth be thy name thy Kingdom Come, be a really cool comic that i like to re-read now and then. Give us this day our daily WoW and forgive us our tresspasses, as we needed to capture the flag. Lead us not into temptarion, unless her name is Betty Paige. And we hold these cards to be self evident that Magic does exist. Let there be cosplayers and dice for all. Forty-Two

A friend of mine and I came up with this in a moment of extreme nerdiness. I felt the need to share. always looking for rewrites and addendum. feel free to add to it.
