Default How Not to Get a Job in Hollywood

Stage Make-Up Class: Send in the Clowns?

Went to my first stage make-up class. The first assignment was to make yourself into a clown!?!? hahaha NOT!

    Jackie T: I won't do a clown

    Instructor: Why??

    Jackie T: I hate clowns.

Instructor: What about an evil clown?

Jackie T: No. I hate those too

Instructor (giggles) So what are you gonna do?

Jackie T: A Cat? Anything but a clown.

Instructor: What do you have against clowns? Do I want to know?

Jackie T: I've done make-up before. I can follow the facial charts without clowning around

Instructor: What am I gonna do with this guy? OK. You don't have to do a clown!

    Jackie T: Thank You.

    muahahahaha

PS: I was surprised to find out that virtually all theater actors (even at the higer levels) do their own make-up. If you look closely, there is no general "unity" in method.

PSS: Advice on make-up for camera? They gave me a fat kit of Ben Nye but I'm not digging it. What do folks use and why?

I pitched maybe two dozen story ideas for Star Trek: Voyager way back when... I came close to selling a few stories, but they were always either not quite what they were looking for, or they were working on something similar... that's the closest I came to getting a job in Hollyweird...

Ben Nye is good stage makeup..but i mostly used it for haunted house people.
    Other suggestions:

    Expensive/Professional Studio use stuff:
    M.A.C.
    Bare Minerals
    Smashbox

    Stage/Special FX:
    Ben Nye
    Cinema Secrets (for clowns!)
    Kryolan

    Those should get you started

Cool. Thanks! The Ben Nye: I think the Instructor goes for the overstatement (understandable as obviously u view ppl onstage from afar) Just kind of gawdy for my uses. I was a gutter boy when I frequented clubs so no experience with anything good. I'll check out a bit of the first 3. The Ben Nye will cover any special effects + I get that free.

You'd probably have to have an in on the show to get a job like that. I'm actually not going for HW at all. I was surprised make-up is all self-application in theater though.

Before the travesty called Enterprise, the producers were accepting stories from anyone and everyone, but you had to at least write a script first to show you had some talent (whether they bought it or not), which is what I did (for Deep Space Nine). Somebody there liked it, which is why I was asked to pitch for the first season of Voyager (which I did 3 times)...

I have to be really careful in terms of my own eyes. Will check the other stuff. I usually just use "pencils" etc. The camera picks up everything though.

It wasn't too bad... I eventually pitched 10 times over the first few seasons...
