Default Where are the best places to buy property/houses?

Re: cheinara wraithwalker's thread, I was wondering where people here think are the best places to buy property and/or houses. There are the things which matter to everyone like price for value and ability to retain value or increase in value, but I think folks here will have some thoughts on some other criteria which matter to me. What about the geography of where one could be a bit . . . eccentric and not have trouble every time one leaves the house.

All I can say for sure is.. "It sure as hell isn't Detroit". For some unknown reason (sarcasim) people seem to be very judgemental around here to anyone who isn't an I.C.D. (inner city dweller). Apparently, you need to be shiftless and lazy to belong here.

Portland, OR is the way to go but it's a little expensive but worth it. Small town atmosphere with big town amenities. And if you live downtown, you can probably get by without even having a car. I've been drooling over condos in the Pearl district in Downtown Portland. They've completely renovated the area and they have also been converting warehouses into lofts. *yum* And, Oregon is a much more liberal area than any place I've been to... outside of SF.

Oregon is actually a good bet, if you can handle the weather.
    Rainy rainy rainy....

But Oregon is full of all kinds of odd people.
Goths, punks, anarchists, modern primitives, hippies, etc...
It's full of odd people, so the locals are used to it.
The locals are still mostly rednecks, but it's a really beautiful place.
And if you buy a place outside of a major city, not *in* the city, prices are not bad at all...

You should take a trip up there, and check it out.
Look at Eugene as well as Portland.

I used to totally have this fantasy about taking a month or three and writing the Great American Novel in Portland. I've been there and I like it, but I think it might be sort of sullied for me now. I like a rainy day, although I don't know if I'd like 365 of them in a row. The quality of light in Southern California is amazing and I love that, but I know no place less expensive has that.

If you can handle 90-days in a row... you're set. Actually, the late spring, summers, early fall here are without equal. Warm, sunny, and occasionally interrupted by rain. The only real times for rain are throughout the winter and this year it has been remarkably nice. Better yet, if you're in a college town in OR it is blissfully quiet in the summers.

As for Eugene, I'm actually quitting my well-paying job and heading back to low-paying academia and heading to Eugene (what can I say, I miss the lifestyle). The housing market in Eugene is brutally tight and all the "Californians" are coming up here in droves and dropping cash down for houses... meaning that the houses are getting more expensive.

But like the DeathKnight said, smaller towns adjoining Eugene and Portland are surprisingly affordable. As for Eugene, when I was going to school there I saw... get this... an organized anarchists march....hahahahaha... Hippies are generational, and for some reason a strong lesbian community seems to congregate in Eugene.

I like it right here in louisville the whole city is kinda out of the mainstream in a lotta ways (hell the city just spent a huge amount of money building a massive skate park) but yeah lots of really pretty houses and the city has a very bohemian feel to it. Property is fairly cheap too if you know where to look.

The winters can be cold. But they're not too bad. The summers are a little cooler than LA or Dallas. Spring is very nice. You do get some pretty bad storms, but they're relatively few and far between.

Nice thing about living in Topeka is I get to eat the nation's best barbecue. Kansas City has some great barbecue and burger joints. The bars are decent. Except you can't smoke in bars in Lawrence. But if you live in Lawrence, you're exactly halfway between Topeka and Kansas City. Plus you can make a killing in real estate and renting houses here. The town grows from 80,000 to 110,000 when KU has classes in session.

Pittsburgh, PA. You can look however you want to here. There are gothic and punk scenes and a need for more venues/stores etc. You can buy a nice house for 100 - 200,000 $ (Less sometimes)
