    Default Moving Sux

So 3 days til lift off. Im going thru a house full of sundry crap. One always says: Ill throw this, that, or the other once I move. Invariably; I find some worth in a hodgepodge of 10 year old t-shirts, records I never use, a few scraps of scribbling, and various unsusable knickknacks.

Anyone ever just say *fuck it* and throw it all away?

When I got to college, it was my 12th school in 12 years. I got pretty used to having to cull stuff pretty hard pretty often.

I never throw everything out, but there is some stuff I just don't acquire any more. Like I don't decorate and I don't buy plates.

A friend of mine's house burned down and she said it was freeing in some respects and of course horrible in others.

    Good luck with the move!

Thanks. I'm down to the knicknacks at this point. I'd never throw out all my tech toys and so forth, but I think I will chuck the older furniture and some of the silly shit. Minimalism is a good thing (especially for a potential slob like me )

PS. How do u get by without plates? Im gonna chuck the current ones, but I'll usually buy some lame set of "dinnerware" eventually

numerous times ive had to let everything go and start over fresh.
its just material possessions. i can always get them or better back one day.

and to get by without plates, theres always throw away...or you can do what i used to do which is use cardboard (i.e. buy a bakable pizza and eat off it lol)

True. I guess every time I move these days, I think back to my days of just picking up and moving to some crazy new group house. I feel kind of silly having sentimental attachments to objects, but some do have some significance to me.

have you thought about rental storages? or those PODS things? maybe you can come back and get them when ya need em so you dont lose much.

*edit* also , have you tried maybe selling it on craigslist? under the barter or free section?
or having a garage sale ..although i think those options are kinda late now.
salvation centers are always looking for unwanted/unused items as well . your old 45's could be somebodies art pieces.

I have plenty of space for em, just feel kinda silly as I drudge thru em. That is good advice in terms of some of the old shit.

craigslist is definitely awesome... i just bought a baby bottle sterilizer and some bottles and cups from a woman off craigslist, all for 30 bucks, when the sterilizer alone in stores costs 50! awesome deal i think.
anyways... yeah moving sucks for sure... i just did too and the stress from it made me massively sick UGH!!

HA... well... over the years of moving
    everywhere from cross-country to
    transcontinental.. at one time or
    another (several) times, I've lost
everything... at this count I believe
I'm up to 6 automobiles.. countless
    articles of electronics.. including
    an IBM mainframe (System 370/
Model 168) with 10 terminals and
plotter printers... it took a forklift
to load and 10 guys to unload
and put into my house.. where I
imagine it still sits to this day...
just the OS was a $4k monthly
rental. And to think that something
of massive only had 8 MB monolithic
processor storage (the size of two
    chest deep freezers stacked atop
    each other)

I've lost or left behind, mostly not
    by choice... everything from clothes
to a fire proof safe cemented into the
basement floor... even a girlfriend once
(that one wasn't a bad thing to lose,
just glad she never figured out where
I moved to)... so all in all, in the end
I've probably started over more than a
    dozen times.

The unfortunate thing now is I still
have a storage unit back east that
is full of items... everything from
    a slew of computers, clothes,
    personal items, furniture and
a brand new car with only 1500
miles on it... the whole extended
hospital stay and not to mention
the almost 1/4 million dollar tab
has put retrieving any of it out of
    reach for maybe another year...
    being three years already.

GAH... fuck moving... it will be
a long time before it happens
again for Muse and I... and then
    we're pushing everything off the
    balcony and torching it... getting
in a taxi, going to SeaTac with
a one way ticket to Amsterdam
    to retire.

    Good luck to you anyhow

I totally feel your pain. I'm in the proccess of getting rid of a bunch of stuff before I move to NC. My house looks like my closet vomited everywhere. have I ever just thrown everything away? kinda. some six years ago, I made a list of ten things I absolutely couldn'y live without. I threw everything out but the things on that list; although I must confess, that My list really had about 12-14 things on it. It was very freeing. After all, they're just "things". most "things" can be replaced......
Now if I could only get some more of this crap out of my house........

Thanks everyone! I'm extremely happy in my new place. I came into town today, saw the headlines, and turned tail. I'll be staying in the cave til school starts. I have a really cool setup and a lot of wilderness to explore.

The last time I moved, I needed to get my sisters with 3 cars and a trailer. We moved everything within 3 hours and only left behind a couple of things. Bear in mind that I hadn't packed anything away because I didn't want to spend too much time in the house with the "Landlord", since he had locked me out when I told him I was not going to be lodging with him anymore. He made me go to work without my keys, and ALL of my stuff in the house.

As I was not officially a tenant, I really had no leg to stand on. We had no written agreement, and at the time, I was a friend and a work colleague of this person, and he knew he had me by the bollocks. He even tried to demand money off me for rent after I moved out. Thankfully, the Civil Service Benevolent Fund helped me out and told him not to demand any cash from me.
