Depends on what you're trying to make and how much sewing experience you have
I've made cosplay costumes before both for myself and for friends (ok more often for friends)
Give me an idea of what you're trying to make and I'll see if I can help you out
Admission: someone taught me to use a sewing machine last week, and it's addicting.
I am wanting to make a Himura kenshin outfit from Rurouni Kenshin...BUT... I have no sewing experience, buy one isnt an option, and I cant even find patterns(but ive only looked for the past couple of days and i'm still trying to get my cosplydotcom verification email)
Honestly it might be easier for you to commission it online. www.limebarb.com is awesome for that. I had them do yoruichi for me and I was going to have her do Anthy as well but never ended up doing it. Her team is awesome. For advice or references etc I would go to cospay.com and ask people who have made it before.
I just sent off for a quote from limebarb, thanks Syrran^^
It is still worth learning to do things for yourself though so if there are small accents or things I'd suggest doing them as a learning experience, limebarb usually has a breakdown of what each item will cost so you can pick and choose to fit your budget . Not much going on for Kenshin but in the future who knows. Oh and the best wig place I've found is Katie Bair's petting zoo. She makes some pretty cool party wigs too.

Good luck!
Very very purdy.
Thank you for posting that link Syrran, I've shared it with some friends of mine. I cant wait to see what the future holds, I've found quite a few that I like.
Yeah...I'm all about internet window shopping. :P If I had spare cash that would be one of the main places I'd splurge it at.
HA! Oh yeah, it'd be scary to see how much I'd spend there if I had some dimes to rub together!!!
Hey thats look going...yeah yeah.... purdy.
its always good to learn thing like this, personally know all to well. I have very good friend that makes costumes. I commission him to make me spartan/ beefcake the mighty suit last Halloween. It still needs more work, but it turn out ok...He making himself right a Elder Predator, for Dragon con or whatever.
ill have to get pics for all
I love anything in a playing card theme.
I've yet to find the perfect card costume. I've always been drawn to card theme aesthetics.
i just seem to coddle random things together.
have a trunk full of random items from all the years doing LARP and various pub fancy dress nights
cosplaying? Sounds Interesting, I think a cosplay outfit that would most definitely
suit me would be "Espada Num. 4 Ulquiorra" from Bleach.
Or Maybe Simon from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann! or Monkey D. Luffy!!!
I dunno, I watch too many anime...
