    Default The Dark Crystal

This movie is known to be loved by at least a few of you guys. My lovely husband, knows how much I love that movie, and how much of an impact it had on me (and he as well)
We're both the same age, and are less than a month and a half apart. We both watched it when it came out on HBO when we were in summer vacation after second grade. So, that makes it ...uh, year... 1983 ...I think.

There's a thread started by AK, about a movie that scared ya ... This one did. But at the same time I loved it. I was horrified at several portions of this movie. It haunted me even, but the good parts of it, were nothing less than awesome.
It was a perfect combination... I was always riveted when I watched it.

What is your thoughts on this movie, and about how old were you when you watched it.... that's optional.
Who was your favorite character, and does anything in particular stand out in your mind about it?

The Dark Crystal and Labrynth always go hand in hand associated with each other...so when you say scary movie I would have thought Labrynth would have been scarier..because you know...you can see David Bowies 80's package in that...

They used to show that movie on military American television in Germany when my mom was stationed there. One time I was watching it and a friend of mine who was Danish came over and was like, "why are the puppets torturing each other?" Apparently the movie does not translate well.

Labyrinth involves girl too young and dumb to figure out that the King of Elfland might be treating a lady right.

I loved The Dark Crystal and The Labyrinth as a kid, infact I still own a copy of both of them for sentimental reasons. I probably saw both when I was 4 - 5ish, around the same time that I first saw The Last Unicorn and Legend. I can remember being home from school sick with a babysitter (my cousin actually) and curling up on the couch in my pjs watching one of those movies over and over until I fell asleep.

I'm not sure why I love them so much, maybe it's because they're simply so much more complex then other childrens films. There's no good and evil, no black and white (though I know on the surface it looks like their is) all of the 'villains' in the movies have a true motivation behind the majority of their actions. In Legend it was love, though of a twisted sort, in The Dark Crystal it was the desire for eternal life (and ofcourse the seperation into 'good' and 'evil' sides of themselves), in The Last Unicorn it was covetousness and in The Labyrinth once again it was a twisted type of love - though maybe I liked The Labyrinth because there were times when I definitely wanted to send my little sister to stay with the goblin king for awhile.

In answer to your other question my favourite character was definitely Fizzgig

Thank you Amelia and Lilly, I LOVED the last unicorn.
That movie kinda bent me... in the same way.

I love it how we all have similar tastes around here.

I have no idea what happened but I'm getting so sick of watching the same rehashed movie over and over.

Like, I watched Tokyo Drift (Fast and the Furious)
    and it was painfully predictable.

the ONLY movie that has ever scared me. was ghostbusters.

i was 4 and wandered downstairs (as i did many times a night being a hyperactive kid) just as slimer screams out the subway.

turntail, upstairs, hide under bed covers

No...It didn't scare me. I was like 14 or 15 when I saw it. I used to LOVE that movie. I saw it in the theater and all I remember was laughing my ass off. Pee Wee was pretty much brand new on the scene (except for some Cheech and Chong cameos) so all his sayings and shit were brand new to audiences.

Yeah...Now it's just O.K. I've heard his "sayings" just way too much to really laugh at them now.

I do think the U.S. owes him a bit of gratitude though. After he got caught wacking off in that porn theater, all of a sudden it was O.K. to say you masterbate and it became a very open subject. Before the arrest, it was like a taboo subject.

Off the top of my head, posters, original and re-prints, Fizgig plush, the board game, a beta video, the collectors cards, comics, a bust, can't recall everything, but I have a closet of "collectors items".
