Dammit, I broke my arm the other day. I'm really pissed at myself actually. I survived a mosh pit in heels but 2 little steps trip me up! Wtf? And, no I wasn't drunk. lol I've never broken anything before and I have to say, this sucks the big one!
I'm not used to relying on other people to do things for me and it's only been 3 days and I'm starting to freak out. Now I'll have to go on short term disability because there is nothing I can do at work with only one arm. A little vacation would be nice but I'm gonna be broke. Grrrr...
Anyway...any coping tips???

well when i was in the hospital with a broken neck this summer what helped me was seein people who had it way worse than I did. its kind of messed up but it worked for me

i'm not exactly sure of the nature of the break. i'm assuming it's not that bad as I won't even be getting a cast on it until tomorrow or wed.
I am a little more relaxed now, just taking things as they come i guess is all you can really do.
I know there are people way worse off than me so i'm going to try not to complain so much

where do you live that they have short term disability?

I live near Toronto, Canada. Does short term disability not exist where you are? I get it through my work benefits but even if I didn't I could still get what's called called 'sick benefits' through the gov't. Anyhow, I just talked to my HR rep. and it only takes 4 days to kick in and I get 60% of my reg. wage, so I'm not totally screwed. Phew.

Breaking yourself sucks. It's not so bad when you get used to the cast. Just glue wires and broken eletronic peices to it and tell everyone your bionic now. It's the Six Million Dollar Arm!

I broke my arm when I was 12 and I always used the cast as a weapon against my older brother. Good times. Good times.

NO POKING. Certainly NO PENIS-ASSISTED POKING.

Scratching an itch under a cast will only make the skin more sensitized by increasing blood flow and causing microscopic abrasions. It feels nice for 20 seconds, but an hour later it's back with menace. Your best bet if you're prone to itching (and I mean itching, not pain, numbness, pins-and-needles.. all that needs checking) is to take oral antihistamines - plain old pollen allergy pills, dosage as on the back of the packet. It may take a few hours to kick in but it does work.

If you've got a plaster cast there's not a lot else, other than trying to keep it raised if it's itching (reduces swelling). Plastic casts are more rugged and you can confuse your nerve responses by.. er... vibrating it. I'll assume you can think of a way to achieve that.

If you're on pain pills, they can cause itching... I've read that people should take antihistamines to combat the nerve itches... BUT from MANY uses of the two....
It only makes my itches WORSE.

you could probably spray paint it black if you use masking tape so you dont get any on yourself. even an itchy cast is better than the deal i had to wear. it was a plastic vest with 4 metal bars connected up to a thing screwed into my scalp to hold my neck in place. like you, ive never broken anything before in my life and i did it with style lol. hope you have a speedy recovery

well i lost the headgear last month but i had to wear a plastic collar for two months but i lost it in 1 month and now im wearin a soft foam collar wich should come off in 2 weeks. my recovery is actualy 1 month ahead of schedule wich is nice. other than wearin the collar evrything is just like it as before . oh and you could probably use electrical tape for a black cast also

my brother punched some kid at school and got a "friday night break", you know the one when you snap the bone in your hand behind your little finger? well he had to wear a cast, and when he went back to school the kid was iving him shit about having to wear the cast so he punched the sid so hard he split the cast and re broke his hand.

that's awful. i've never broken anything. but one time a suspension went horribly wrong and did some kind of nerve damage or something... i couldn't use my left arm at all for two weeks. it's still weak, even though that was like a year ago....
