    Default Forensics

I've been watching some forensics television lately. TiVo has really wreaked havoc with my TV watching. Anyone watch any of those shows? Have a favorite?

What % of crime scene investigators do you think have committed serious crimes using their knowlege of forensics? Or is that morbid?

I don't watch them....but you make a good point. I guess I should be nicer to scientists and stuff.

Hard to tell...since criminals of that calibur are either notoriously difficult to pin point or work in a pattern that allows for little to no modern techniques to be worthwhile. Serial killers who take extended "vacations" in their killings are a prime example...or killings that are truly random. Still that's not to say they will not be caught...like old detectives say...this stuff is not a sprint it's a marathon.

That said it's harder and harder to get away with this stuff and criminals seem to be aware of it...should prove interesting how crime evolves.

Serial Killers probably have the biggest advantage over everyone else. most other crimes are easier to trace/solve. When you have a serial killer (Take Bundy for instance) who is a "normal person" and kills random people in random places, they are harder to figure out! They are also most likely to be the type of criminal who would use knowledge of forensics to their advantage. From my understanding of "MANY" serial killers, they are typically smart with an average to above average IQ. The most dangerous criminal would be a forensic pathologist turned serial killer.
The only problem there is that throughout the 14 or so years of training that the pathologist must undergo, if they had a serial killer mind, they would likely be unable to avoid making some sort of mistake (i.e. having sex with or mutilating a body meant for autopsy)

I don't watch any of those shows (I don't have TV), but from the age of 9, I've read almost any scientific book related to serial killers and forensics (specifically pathology and psychology). I actually entered my psychology program with hopes of being a forensic psychologist. Only problem there is I would be stuck working in a prison (as we maybe have 1 or 2 profilers in all of Canada, and typically borrow them from the States when required)

Anyway, forensics are cool, and IF I ever had the inclination to commit murder, I could probably give the police and investigators a good run for their money with my knowledge. (not that I would EVER do that, just saying)

Didn't they make a reallly crappy movie out of something like that?

my high school biology teacher had a doctorite in chemistry and two bachaelors in criminal justice and sociology. he worked as a forensic person for awhile until he retired from it to teach... he used to joke around alot that he could kill us with poisons that would be totally undetectable in autopsy ...or even worse he would poison us with something that would just about completley kill the mind and then break down in the body leaving no trace of the chemicals but no way to fix the brain it scared the shit out of us....

my favorite episode of csi was with the magician who killed his brother to fake his own death.

I watch CSI compulsively, mostly to see Marg Helgenberger pulling on the latex gloves.

CSI is totally NecroPorn Nerd Baywatch, and apparently drives real CSIs insane with the liberties they take. Of course that adds to my enjoyment.

I totally love her character, albeit, probably not the same way you do. Forrest says a local bartender last week started to tell him about meeting her at this coke-fueled party and then just sort of trailed off and couldn't quite finish the story. I'm hoping the story involved latex gloves though.

I have always had a huge interest in forensics. I like some of the learning channel shows on forensics. I am also really interested in forensic anthropology. I find forensic psychology very interesting too. It's fascinating stuff.

Anyone else thinking that if their is ever a Blue Blood Boards meet and greet so to speak it should be at a mourge or some place with a dead body? Or at the very least a variation on the old Solve The Murder Mystery party with a forensics twist to it. Cause really I can't think of better people I want to spend looking at dead bodies with.

Anything with Bill Kurtis is always interesting, if only for the baritone voice-overs.
