tequila are you really going to chime in on that? come on man, show me at least a little bit of inteligence. I mean last time you wrote soo much (most of it not making a whole lot of sense) and this time you attack me with this. why dont you at least ask me something like, how, if I dont believe in god and dont think one exists, claim him to be dead? you verry well cant kill what doesnt exist.Originally Posted by Tequila Zaire
yes that is true, but the one's that are yet to be born will have a very hard time trying to gain any real power or infuance. we look at most new religions as a cult or a sham. scientolagy was the last religion to actually gain some acceptance.Originally Posted by BrightStar

What I wrote was simple and to the point and given the lack of depth in all of your replies I'm starting wo wonder if you've given this entire idea of "god is dead" any serious thought.Originally Posted by devil13

You think this discussion has been though provoking and deep? It's been pure shit...high school nonsense at best. The books mentioned for you to read have some very credible and well drawn out arguments and ideas...read that and then raise the same question...you'll get a better discussion.
You came into this ill-prepared, without focus, and not even one ounce of originality.
You seem to think this idea or notion somehow begins and ends with you and an individual...it doesn't. You can proclaim anything dead...God...The Devil...A genre of music...but if the idea is out there and their is faith in that idea then it is very much alive.
You see...saying something is dead is far too easy...having faith something is alive...now that's hard and nothing one man says can break that. So proclaim all you wish is dead my athiest friend...it has about as much validity as me saying I am god.
Oh they can see it clear enough...that's what angers them.Originally Posted by cheinara wraithwalker

Ever pick up a math book? It can prove the existance of just about anything. Math is the only true universal language and it continues to evolve and shed light on the mysteries of the world. Math does not lie...it can't. Everything breaks down to numbers and some do feel that is where god is...hidden in an equation, waiting to be solved. Books are odd little things, they are like people. They can lie, they can tell the truth, and they can die. Only the worthless dismiss them.Originally Posted by devil13

My whole point is that no one can prove *anything*, everything is just a bunch of theories. Hell, gravity is a theory, and it's worked for 3987928475204 years.
I'm beginning to wonder if it's not so much a matter of wanting to prove soemthing as not wanting to accept it.Originally Posted by cheinara wraithwalker

One of the things that has always bugged me about athiesm is the claim that science does not support the possibility of god. The thing is science acknowledges that it cannot disprove god. Look up the scientific method and attempt to apply it to god. OK then.
The other thing that bugs me is the idea that wars are fought over religion. Very few if any were, religion is sometimes the very thing excuse but it you trace it back wars are most often fought over property, be it land money or resources. Just because it is done in the name of god, doesn't mean god is the reason. Just because my shirt says nike doesn't mean that nike is making me go to the store. If people were not trying to shove xtian morals down our throat, they would be doing the same thing with some other ism, like socialism, capitalism or athiesm.
So here is my counter arguement, show me that there is no god. You don't need to prove it, just show me some evidence. And you can't use the bible cause, like you said, just cause it is in a book doesn't mean it's true.
Hail Eris!
This is dumb. The OP is just like the people he hates, or would like to call dumb. So everyone hates it when religion is shoved down our/their throats, so what is this thread about? Shoving atheism down others throats. Im an athiest, an extreme atheist, but Id never be the people I bitch about.

It is human nature and a requirement of our advancement and survival to come up with concepts like language and mathematics. True, you can call it whatever you like, but the pure concept - devoid of human language to express it, or even of humanity itself - of 2+2=4 is now and ever shall be.Originally Posted by Morning Glory
I'm a total athiest, but have you guys ever heard of the concept of the pink elephant?
The example goes like this:
If you look around your apartment, and your life, you will see no evidence of pink elephants. In fact, you probably don't see evidence of any *real* elephants at all. But that does not mean that pink elephants do not exist somewhere, and you have just never seen one.
Of course, that does not mean I will have "faith" that pink elephants exist.
And I would not believe real elephants exist, until I had seen one for myself,
or seen a picture of one, etc... So the same thing goes for god. I am not going
to believe in god, until I see some evidence. But that does not mean god
does not exist, or an afterlife does not exist. It is just not visible in this
world. But I see a lot more evidence that everything is part of nature,
and that we are all part of the animal world. When we die, we will
cease to exist, and we will rot. The end. But I could be wrong...
Is Devil13 still around? this thread keeps bouncing up the list and (s)he doesn't seem to have posted for a page or so.
in reverse cronological, a few thoughts:
Science dos not support God, or deny them either. God is one of the many things Science has shelved under 'check back later'. maybe something will come up and we'll find proof one way or the other. i don't see what form that evidence could take, but that's often the way of things. is god dead? for D13, apparently. the word 'dead' suggests that a thing was 'alive' at some point, which goes against the doctrine of atheism, therefore i assume (s)he's refering to their own personal concept of god, alive during the religious upbringing but no longer.
As to religious wars... No, i've yet to hear of a war that is more than nominally about religion. that said, religion is a superb way to rally support for a war, an excellent way to motivate your soldiers and a very useful excuse for suppressing any dissent. having a largely secular population doesn't prevent a nation going to war, but it does make things a little more difficult for someone intent on causing one.
Religion is a very complex subject, and one which manifests on many levels. When we think of religion, we tend to think of beliefs. Do we worship a god or a goddess? Or both? One supreme being, or many deities?Or do we not worship at all. What are their stories? What legends do we believe? What festivals do we celebrate? But with any set of beliefs comes a set of actions. Certain things are good, thus encouraged or commanded. Other things are bad, thus discouraged or forbidden. And some people differ on how widely their religious rules apply. Some believe their rules apply only to members of their faith; others may hold that their god's laws apply to all people everywhere. As long as any person's membership in any religion is free and uncoerced, then we must allow this person the freedom to believe as she wishes, no matter how stupid we consider her belief to be. In allowing others the ownership of their own beliefs and paths, we have the obligation to allow them to follow the paths they have chosen for themselves as long as they are not causing harm to others. And with this I have said my share, I am the type of person that doesn't care if you worship or not i truely believe that as long as you treat others the way you would like to be treated then every thing would be ok. ** WARNING this is my opinion and my opinion only no animals where hurt while stateing my opinion. THANK YOU!** =)
good post beyond death. to qoute chris rock in dogma "where they went wrong was they took an idea and built a belief structure out of it... people shouldn't have beliefs, they should have ideas. at least you can change an idea." or something along those lines, I don't exactly remember. sounds good.

Now I started this thread to get people to talk about the subject. I picked the title because it would get peoples attention. It has worked. I mean, I started this thread a day ago and look at how many of you have replied. I am NOT anrgry or full of hate. I can be sarcastic, but only to those that deserve it. I think it is rather funny because so far I have gottenwell I dont think it is and I dont think most of you think it is either.
