Well...score a copy of photoshop (be it legal or less so...) and school up on photoretouching...either in a class or from a book or tutorials.

At some point you'll need some qualified guidence though.

I'd say don't bother. The market is already swamped and everyone and their grandmother knows photoshop these days. You'd really be wasting your time if you're just starting with zero knowlege.

Of course that's my advice if you're considering a career change. If you're just trolling for a new hobby, then by all means hit up some books (I personally recomend the "Classroom in a book" series which are great for newbies) and check out some tutorials online.

    Good luck.

yeah the goal of a photographer should be to NOT have to edit photos. anyone can use a program to make a picture, the real challenge is capturing the perfect one in reality. ansel adams didn't use no photoshop.

He had very good photo printeres in the darkroom though.

Obviously you've never been in a darkroom...photoshop simply allows for many of the techniques, tricks, and experimentation common in a darkroom to be used outside of it...with far less cost.

Ansel Adams is not a good example anyhow since you're talking about a rather rare individual who not only knew his craft but added to it...and as it was said before...he had a really good darkroom.

My father was a photographer for many many years and I saw the importance a good darkroom made to ones work daily...capturing an image is only half the challenge...

Try this...take what you think is a "perfect" image. Print it out on various papers and through various printers...you'll see a marked diffrence in both quality and impact...let alone on its perfection.

I'm wondering how chemical developing is the same as pixel texture mapping.

the difference is that that you can use different developing and printing techniques to edit a photo traditionally, but you are still working with the original captured image, not changing the image itself like digital software does.

You can still change the "original captured image" in the darkroom...it was a project in a photography 101 class I took years back actually. Most was done in the development process but their was quite a bit involved with screwing around with the original negative...plus "Digital software" gives you enough options to work as you want, be it preserving what was shot or manipulating the entire image from the base on up...

End of the day though neither can substitute talent and skill...plus the thread starter was asking how to EDIT photos for models...not take them.

Sorry that I missed your convention for condescending assholes that accuse other people of going off topic while at the same time contributing nothing to the discussion other then every opportunity to inflate their own ego. Although I guess with only one person, it's not much of a convention.

Well ain't that the pot calling the kettle black. I added more than enough info to give our new member the info he added, unlike the typicial nonsensical bullshit of purity you rant on about time and time again. But hey, everything has it's use and purpose. However I'd gladly inflate my ego...if it mattered here. It clearly does not. Relax it'll all come to an end soon enough.

Bondage Clown -- I definitely second the suggestion to put up a portfolio. If your friends don't mind, you can post a few before and after examples to show what you can do. Then more people will want you to do it.

Convention boys -- I expect you both to have inflated (or least quite large) egos. Please don't fail me on this point.

I think that there are indeed too many people who know how to do Photoshop. But you can still make a living as a photographer. I think the best use of your photoshop skills, is not in editing someone else's pictures, but in taking your own, and doing your own editing work. That way you get a nicer quality product to show people. Be it glamor shots, or pictures of people's kids, or fashion stuff, etc... If you can do good photo-editing/retouching, your work will look better than other people's. But I also have to agree, that editing can only fix so much, and you need to work on your skills with the camera first. And if you only want to edit pictures, I do think that market is oversaturated.

Well, there are not that many that are really good, but there are a MILLION amateurs who think they are good at it, but really aren't... They run a filter, and show it to their friends, and everybody tells them they are an artistic genius...

That is because when people talk to others They try to tell them what they want ot hear, instead of what they should be saying...

The revolution has started.. TELL PEOPLE HOW IT IS
