    Default So this is depressing

My friend Daniel is stationed in Iraq (he fixes planes). He'll be there till mid January or so. I want to send him a nice x-mas care package, but ideas of what to put in it? So I'm turning to you lovely idea-full people for input.
    So far I have:
two pairs of those really thick squishy socks that make standing up for hrs not so bad

    A pkg of Oreos
    Some homemade cookies

Hot cocoa mix with lil marshmallows

A good book (I'm thinking "American Gods" or "WeaveWorld")

What else? A dirty magazine? Some micro machines? A beach pail and shovel for making sand castles?

Lets see the options are vast. I'd go with what he may not have access to the most...what that is you may have to weasel out of him all low key like. Their has to be something he really liked here that he can't get over there that you know about.

When in doubt though anything to kill the downtime sounds like a good idea...books, movies, porn, the latest issue of Highlights...cause one is never to old to brush up on the basics.

Their are tons of lists up about what people are sending those stationed over seas...you may want to check those out and see if they give you any ideas.

hahahahahahahh Yeah so do I when I'm at the dentist. Which is really hard cause it's an all female staff and they're all hot...but that damned Highlights just calls my name.

I use to love that magazine as a kid.

armor, chelation therapy to help him get rid of the toxic depleted urianium dust he's probably breathing...

    ...sorry...

...COMIC BOOKS!!! (less depressing than porn... you can only look at so much porn before it starts to piss you off...)

I dunno... if he likes comix, then those would be good... especially funny comic strips like 'the perry bible fellowship', and 'the maakies'

uh... you're already sending him oreos... homebaked cookies are always really nice... maybe some weird junkfood items he's never seen before (that's what my step-mom always used to send...)

you know, chocolate, and peanut butter...peanut butter, and chocolate... always a good combo... (I hear that reeses just made a cookie of some sort...)

how about one of those satan bobble heads?

anyway, good luck I hope he's okay...

While I can't speak from experience, from what I've read from guys stationed over there, it's boring as fuck (except when they're launching grenades at you). So, things to pass the time are important. Books are probably good. If he has a laptop or portable DVD player or something, movies would be good too. Titties can't be denied, although I would wonder about the privacy level there. Not much point to seeing titties if you can't wank it, I always say.

Actually, I usually just think that.

I heard they wank it in the latrines, and that porn is not allowed, but they use men's magazines like Stuff, Details, Maxim, etc... So hook him up with some of that. And also the food is a good idea, because they only get the same MREs and crappy army food. Maybe some canned food like soups, etc? And yeah, books or comics are a good idea too...

I was always the pacifist medic in d20 modern D:

Anyway: does he have a handheld game system, such as a GBA or DS or something? If so, send him some games for it. If not, the older handheld systems, such as a Game Boy Pocket or Color can be gotten surprisingly cheap, and the games are like five bucks each. If you can find a store that sells used gaming hardware, something like that plus a few games (there are final fantasies for game boy original! not to mention shadowgate, which is evil and so fun, and kirby, and so on and so forth) could really help.

    Choose-your-own-adventure books :p.

A teddy bear. Or some small cuddly thing (I have a zombie teddy bear named, imaginatively, Zombear) that they can squeeze around and pretend will scare off the deadly sleep ghouls.

i think books are fabulous. "shantaram" by gregory david roberts, (of course im gonna reccomend my favorite) "weaveworld" DEFINITELY kicks fucking ass too. "the summer tree" "the wandering fire" and "the darkest road" by guy gavriel kay. awesome fantasy trilogy *drool* so similar to lord of the rings yet entirely 100% different at the same time.

my boyfriend says send him a couple of native girls. or a rifle haha... foot powder? a collection of non english field manuals.
noodles! he can boil em and eat them, or throw them at people... either way... awesome fun. and jello. honestly , what could be more fun than jello?

colgone,.. just cause he;s out there doesn't mean he has to smell like camels and shit,.. and that portable gaming system thing,.. was running thru my mind I came back to comment on a psp,.. you can put movies in there for him too, and they pick up on wireless web signals ,.. I don't know if that available to him in iraq tho. ,.. but I mean just cause he's out there doesn't mean he isn't receiving a paycheck every other week. hell ,.. I don't know,.. a football?(i heard they play soccer out there).

:/- just trying to help :[

Okay, now if I had a million dollars I would get him a PSP and fist full of games and movies, but I'm not. Trying to keep the whole box, shipping and all, under $100 cause I'm the brokeness. Hence the cookies, a good book, maybe a travel game of scrabble. Small, light and useful. I like the sunscreen idea. I like the BB calender idea. If I had one and wasn't in it. This is like the only person besides my aging granparents that doesn't know about my career. So yeah. Maybe some stickers for his helmet though. *ponders*
Any one else got any good ideas?

Maybe some cute stuff you can pick up for free? Postcards from record stores, those little music mags that most have. See if you can score any of those freebie cd's that a lot of smaller music stores have laying around. If you don't see any you can always ask. He like word games? You can get those little books of them at the grocery story for like a dollar and they are pretty light.

If you have a large group of people near you who also know him and wish him well, have them all write him something personal on a big letter. Inside jokes, favorite jokes, quotes, stuff like that. A BIG taste of home, and cheap to boot!

The socks are a great idea, If you know his shoe size (aprox) throw in some Dr.Scholls inserts...make his boots that much more happy! Foot powder is also great, anything to make those tootsies feel good!

And definately something he can "do". Does he do crosswords? any puzzles? Stuff like that, something that can take his mind off things, and allow him to actually accomplish something (instead of wanking off to porn, which is also cool). Add some gum maybe?

I'll let you know if I think of anything else!

Definitely some porn...I'd go for an easily concealed smaller-format European mag like Private or one of it's sister publications. You know it will be well received !

Speaking of smaller formats, how about one of those cool 'manga-sized' reprints of Frank Miller's 'Sin City'. Top reading material, good to pass around and share with friends, plus there will be a lot of folk out there who haven't seen the movie, but may have already heard about it....

Do you have Sudoku books in America yet, or has that craze not reached your shores yet? Always good fun, and if he fixes planes, I figure he's a good methodical problem solver...

...but definitely go with the porn!
