Attitude is defense for a lot of the middle-rankers. People see the 'big names' throwing their weight about and assume a bit of the same will make them look important too. As with all constructs, push back a little and it all gives way.
If there is a secret in this game, it's being yourself. It's secondary if that means you're nice or not, so long as folks can rely on you being the same. People who keep reinventing themselves confuse the roadkill-level IQs of the Boys on the Board, so get bypassed. Standing your ground when there's a valid issue is just as important as not creating them to get 10 more seconds in the limelight.
Oh, and as to 'genre'.. carry a notepad. When an inflated ego with Twinkies for brains says the word (usually followed by "..my dear...") just look like you're taking notes and say, politely..
"jon..ra... okay.. er - can you spell that for me?"
