    Default TV goes Goth?

Has anyone else in the UK noticed that quite a few adverts are now using what are considered to be Goth music as background music? Mariliyn Manson "Sweet Dreams" advertising cars, Nine Inch Nails songs being used to advertise "Underworld- Evolution" and some tv programmes, Echo & the Bunnymen "Killing Moon" to advertise "Supernatural", The Cure to advertise cars, Depeche Mode "Precious" to advertise "Bones" (a tv series on SKy TV) and finally, LEVI's using the slogan "Go Moon-Bathing with Levi's".

Just curious if anyone else has noticed anything else? Is this thing happening in the States as well?

It's not just a UK thing, and it's been going on quietly for years. As advertisers aim for their target group they try to find music that is either recognisable or fits their demographic, and 'goth' and 'nu-metal' are now the domain of the 20-30 groups rather than teens. Also (with respect to those who think metal is somehow rebellious) a lot of brands prefer to avoid pop (too ephemeral) and rap (too gangsta), which leaves the 1960's and Marilyn Manson. Marvin Gaye's so been done, so there ya go.

A couple of months ago I heard New Order in a shoe commercial. It made my eye twitch and I nearly shat myself.

Ack! Same here, Jessica. And also, for 2 or 3 movies they've used "Bite the hand that feeds" even it that song WASN'T on the soundtrack.

Nice to see I'm not going crazier than normal. Maybe it's the fact that most people that were teenage goths in the 80's are now earning cash from work so advertisers want to get their attention.

honey, if you think Brian wrote that, you must've missed the 80's. 1983 to be specific - Cellphones had handles, you were only cool when you rolled up the sleeves of your suit jacket, Madonna dropped her last name and pressed a single, every kid wanted something from the Cabbage Patch, and Annie Lennox was only wearing an eyemask and a black glove.

oh, and on a good note, they invented crack cocaine that year, in a small outhouse in Grand Bahama. Apparently it did rather well.

Unfortunately, over here we don't get Saturday Night Live, so I missed it.

Wow, no, that's kind of the opposite of what I meant. Evidently I don't know what cover means. Meh. =/
