Techniques on Painting.

Ok, I am trying to make a Black and Gold type Combo on some stuff I am Painting. (I would take pictures, but it is 8$ to develop film, and 2 $ to buy more, and the WebCam I have is an IBM type that is low quality.)

Anyways, Here is how I have gone about that.

I used the Apple Barrel Paints to do this:

Dolphin Gray as a Base, then Antique or King's Gold on top of that, with Black for the Details,clothing ,etc, and Pool Blue as the color for the Skin.

Any suggestions on making the colors come out in a smoother manner, or making them combine better?

(It may just be that the brushes suck though, since they were the cheap type.)

I know next to nothing about the different types of brushes, but seem to recall someone telling me you could get a much smoother effect but ditching the brush and using small pieces of felt or similar.

Either that, or airbrush.

Soaking them in Simple Green or Nail Polish Remover can remove the glue or paint stuck in them, but can possibly mess the brushes in the nail polish remover if you arent careful.

what exactley are you painting dude? I think it's yer bass coat that is fucking you up I have been painting since Iwas 5 when i gota model plane, I paint models planes and figurines, canvas wood concrete and metal if you could explain exactley what yer doing.....you said something about uniforms...I am thinkg your painting figures, if so and yer using gold I can help but I need more info.I can tell you that good brushes are a MUST....but if it is figures I owuld go witha white base caot and let it dry completely. you can aske me whatever you want on this one I have been doin this shit forever and would be glad to help you.

Their black sticks the best, but the grey has the best undercoat for any colors.


It was funny how some can of white primer accidentally had GOLD primer in it before.

I probably will go with the White, as the Green Skin of the Orks goes better onto that easier than on the Black Primer.

the punk band is good too!....also gte a book on colour thoery paint the green first the go black, lighter the dark always same rule in screen priniting...

For the scale of the models you are working with, craft type acrylics are awfully thick. You would want to thin them down quite a bit. A lot of model painters even thin down the model pain which is already very thin compare to what you are using. For the size of the models you are working with, make sure there is only a little bit of pain on the brush at a time and rinse the brush a lot to keep the paint from building up. If you are thinning the paints enough you will probably need at least 2 or three coats to cover the model. I am not familiar wityh the Apple Barrel brand, but when I used Liquitex for models that small it ended up taking a lot longer than using model paint and I still ended up layering it on too thick. It canm work, you just have to be a lot more patient. You may want to look into using a flow enhancer or drying retarder as well.

Liquitex makes these products but future floorwax makes an excellent flow release at that scale when mixed at about 8 parts water, 2 parts floor wax, 1 part paint, but you will have to experiment to get a mix that works for you.
