It was bad.
Now, I'm on prescription drugs for them. (I've been through a whole slew of them...and some were miracle-drugs for the migraines but had attrocious side-effects, while others were useless at preventing the migraines it seemed). Now, I still get headaches, but only rarely do I get a really bad migraine. (ironically, "headache" is a side effect of the migraine meds I'm on now. But as anyone who's had a MIGRAINE knows.... it's much, much worse than just a "headache" so... I can deal with that).
Anyway, I have picked-up a few things that work tremendously well by me and I'd reccomend them.
Surprisingly, one thing I reccomend is.... Advil Liquigels. Honestly, they work better than any other meds I've tried, (even perscriptions) at easing a migraine when I get one. For some reason, the regular Advil doesn't have the same effect for me, though...just the Liquigels. (I think it hits your blood stream faster or something like that).
If you don't like drugs/medication at all, and are looking for something other than a pill.... then I'd reccomend Peppermint Oil (the bottle I have calls it Peppermint Spirit). Basically, you put a bit on your fingertips and kneed it into your temples. For really bad migraines, you can apply it to your forehead and your cheek bones too. It feels a little wierd as it evaporates, but it does make the migraine feel tremendously better. Sometimes it takes two applications and a little bit of temple-massaging, but it works!
Other than that....sometimes, I'll just sleep it off. But, no, I don't really reccomend that method, because it isn't fun or pleasant.
And, as for changing your diet... here's what I say (and what I did)... try it, eliminating one thing at a time. If you still get migraines, then re-introduce the foods back into your diet, as it's not them. At this point, I know I can have chocolate and such and be fine. But specific spices and specific nitrate-heavy meats (especially when fried) are triggers for me. The truth is, though, even if they're triggers, I still enjoy them. It's just that I recognize it has to be in moderation. And, at this point, I, too, refuse to give up chocolate just because it *could* be a trigger for most people, since I've found it *isnt* one for me.
Two other things that really helped my migraines (as in helped me get them less frequently, not helped when I had them) were trigger specific. One of my triggers was hormonal. I found, by experimentation, that certain forms of birth control actually prevented my hormonal migraines.
The other.... I learened I have TMJ. (When I get a migraine, my whole face hurts, not just my head, and that's part of why). I got a bite-plate to wear at night, and I get less migraines when I do wear it.
Hopefully some of that helps. And hopefully you'll find something that works for you! Migraines suck. And I hope you don't get them too bad or too often!
