I started very young reading 2000ad, moved through Dark Horse when they first started the Aliens/Predator/Terminator/Robocop stuff. Now I prefer independent comics.

yes- but only because the comics i was reading back then have gone all "alternate universe" on me. *gag* I read alot more Slave Labour than I did way back when. Better stories - and Disney tie ins.

Read a lot of Marvel's work as a kid, especially Daredevil. To me, Marvel's writing, and this was in the '70's-early '90's, was generally so much better than DC's, it wasn't funny.

Beginning around the early '90's, and especially after I came down to Vegas, developed a taste for comics like the Hernandez Bros' Love And Rockets, and Evan Dorkin's Milk And Cheese, and from there, began moving towards, a couple of years ago, Jason Lute's Berlin, which is his comic-book history of Berlin in the late '20's and early '30's.

In the past couple of years, have also developed something of an interest in the manga version of Battle Royale, the Japanese novel-cum manga-cum-films, and have a fair number of the books in the series, though, alas, not the story in its entirety yet.

That, I hope, will come in time.

For me, what makes a good comic book is the writing and characters, first and foremost, then the artwork.

A comic book with great writing and characters, but so-so artwork, is, however uneven, better than one with great graphics, but bad writing and poorly realised characters.

But, that's just my opinion. Others are entitled to feel quite differently about it.

since i can only really read any comic once, maybe twice, its pointless me buying them, so i pretty much have to rely on the library to read comics. from what they bother bringing in, the only ones i ever read are the sandman comics (which i can and have read eleventy billion times in direct violation of the above rule. i really should hunt down and buy some of them). online, however, i read a shiteload of comics.

what webcomics, if any, do y'all read?

SomethingPositive.net - not just cause the artist is a good friend of mine (who brings me chocolates) but because the comic really is funny in a scathing sarcastic way.

TwoLumps.net - REALLY funny comic about a pair of cats. extra funny if you happen to have two cats just like Eben and Snooch.

and Penny-Arcade.com/comic - funny, geeky, relevant and nearly required reading.

    midnightmacabre.com - another of Randy's funnies.

when i was a kid it was all about spidey, and batman.
then i started reading daredevil when frank miller was writtin' it. thor.
g.i.joe was the shit for about 100+ issues.
then came the obligitory x-men phase that lasted till high school, when the writting started to suck biggeth time, and i swore off comics forever.

...until one day i walked in the comic book store, and saw a title called "Hellblazer", i bought #1, and got hooked again, reading all the vertigo titles before they were vertigo... watchmen, v for vendetta.

...plus of course the dark night, and elektra:assassin. then cerebus in college, grendel, faust, xxxenophile...too many to mention... alan moore anything, morrison's invisibles...JTHM...

...then i fell the fuck off again... the only comic i read now on the regular is 100 bullets... sometimes fables just becuase i started to read it..

meh, i'm sure there's way cool stuff out there...

...one thing i started to read as a kid, and will always collect/hunt down as i can find them are the old Jademan East chinese kungfu comics like "Drunken Fist", "Oriental Heros", "Force of Buddha's Palm" and "Bloodsword Dynasty" these comics were the shit, and are what got me obessed with kung fu... they stopped printing them back in the 90's in english, but the authors, and artists went on to do other things, some of which have been translated and distributed like "Heavansword, Dragonsaber."

    ah, good times...

    ...but all gone now...

I used to be really into Shojo comics (Like...Cardcaptor Sakura, Salior Moon, etc.) Now I've moved onto those wierd Mangas that nobody's really heard of but they're freakin awesome anyway. Anything by Mitsukazu Mihara pretty much rocks my socks...

ha, ive already had them all bookmarked. actually, ill make a list. it may not seem terribly exclusive, but i only regular the very best (imho) of webcomics. ive checked literally hundreds of other webcomics that i didnt like.
-Bad News Radio (the worst story ever told)
-Bob The Angry Flower (random evil flower pointlessness every friday)
-Bunny: The Book Of Random (if you dont read it Bunnythulhu will do unnice things to you)
-Catharsis (crazy lady, dragon, squirrel, cat balls of fluff, pirate sock - the main characters)
-Comedity (dont step on the penguin)
-Commissioned (O hates pirates. but this is only fair, as ninjas are cooler)
-Contemplating Reiko (evil little tales of an evil little girl)
-Death Piglet (aww, so cute. with chainsaws.)
-Duel With Death (the origin story of Death piglet. involves the reaper, a biscuit and charges of public indecency)
    -Deranged Comics ("the other DC")
-Dominic Deegan: Oracle For Hire (cynical and filled with horrible, horrible puns)
-Giant In The Playground Comics (Order Of The Stick & Erfworld; slightly different styles)
-Head Injury Theatre (i may have mentioned that once or twice here before)
-Jack (the reaper is a bunny. koo.)
-John And John (a pair o perverts that vaguely resemble penises (penii?))
    -Kawaii Not (cute gone bad)
    -Looking For Group (WARLOCK FTW!!)
-Misfile (girl loses memory & boy becomes girl, hilarity ensues)
-Nuklear Power (8 Bit Theatre is the shiznit)
-Penny Arcade (gamer humour but im no gamer and me likey)
-Samurai Pride (i just like samurais, ok? is that so bad?)
-Schlock Mercenary (the titular character is a pile of goo obsessed with guns. noish.)
-Sinfest (boldly tackling all the big subjects, like weed, booze, porn and poetry)
-Something Positive (dudes, just go there. eleventy billion percent pure concentrated awesome.)
-The Outer Circle (heehee peeks an idiot)
-The Unfeasible Adventures Of Beaver And Steve ("Shoes are like hats, for feet!")
-The Zombie Hunters (a. zombies. b. she has a kitty hat.)
-Two Lumps (i tend to feel like benny a lot, although i usually seem like snooch)
-VG Cats (heh, those cats think theyre peoples.)

so um yeah, theres one or two.
