    Default Fuck You Ttc!!!!

Toronto Transit Comission, which provides Toronto with its streetcars, busses, and subways went on strike at 12:01 this morning without giving the promised 48 hours notice, stranding a shitload of people around the city.

Lucky me, I was safe at home when it happend...but only because I spent the last couple hours prepping for my cousin's birthday party that I'm hosting tomorrow that looks like its to have a disappointing turn out.

Great. I have a four-layer chocolate mocha cake that I slaved over and 200 jello shots.

I feel bad for those people who went out tonight looking to enjoy the end of their work week, and now either have to find a cab, walk, or hitch a ride. I don't even want to get into those who just think 'fuck it' and drive, possibly inebriated, or those women out there who may be forced to walk home...a whole lotta bad shit can go down, is all I'm thinking

God dammit, fuck you ttc. Right in the ass.

That's kinda messed up. What are the striking transit workers' grievances? Any idea why they thought not giving notice was a good idea? I'm just imagining someone getting to the end of an evening, they could maybe have skipped, and finding out that they are trapped where they are.

I wish we had better public transportation in Los Angeles, in the US in general really.

I hope lots of people figure out creative (and hopefully safe) ways to get to you and your four-layer chocolate mocha cake and jello shots :-)

I have mixed feelings. it sucks that people are inconvenienced or have down-right ruined days.

But then again, if workers aren't able to totally screw things up with their absence, then they don't really have much leverage for a strike, do they?

most workers have it pretty shitty, so I am usually down for them striking. most of us don't have the luxury of not being expendable, so I feel like someone should take advantage of it. Not like asshole sports players or hollywood producers though, who want more millions than they are already getting. psh.

Yeah, I have the same mixed feelings about that too...I've worked for a private corporation for a long time and well, it's not fun knowing there is no union to back you up if you're dissatisfied with your job situation or a lousy 1% pay raise -or NO pay raise.

On the other hand, I feel for the millions of riders who rely heavily on the TTC to get around...maybe the government should make it an essential service - especially since gas prices have gone through the roof...I'm still glad I got rid of my car...

Not really....Unionized jobs are on the decline in Canada - thanks to that lousy globalization. And although we have universal health care it doesn't really cover anything at all...It's kinda like a "nothing" health care system i.e., got a cold? got to the doctor so he can write you a prescription - even though we both know nobody needs a presciption for a common cold. Got a heart problem? fork over a couple a grand first to see the specialist who is NOT paid by Le Governement du Canada

It's actually more of a communist system...where members of parliament get huge UNWARRANTED 30% pay hikes and a $150,000/yr retirement pension...and just for sitting in the house of commons and twirling their thumbs all day...

The thing is, everyone had thought the strike threat was over...an agreement had been presented that the head of the union had agreed with, but it was the maintenance workers who rejected it during the vote, not the drivers, etc...

Being a factory worker myself occasionally (non-unionized, as well,) I definitely see the need for worker protection, I've grown up around it. My sister is in the local BCTGM/BCTM (Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers) and my father is a unionized construction worker. The thing is, working for the TTC is a great job to have: they have great benefits, job security, and are extremely well paid. According to my cousin, a bus driver, one is even considered a government employee and gets discounts at hotels, etc. and encounter no trouble when crossing the border. If you get a job for the TTC, you are considered set for life. In short, they are pretty well spoiled compared to the rest of us who toil for minimum wage and rely on ever-increasing fares ($2.75 a ride), it was an all around shitty thing to do. There is talk of making it an essential service.

As for the party, its been postponed till next saturday, when hopefully the strike is over. The cake, however, didn't make it through the day
