I remember when I worked for Playgirl's parent company, some folks over there told me they would be out of business depending on women's $$$ to keep that mag afloat. Women are kinda lame in this respect and it makes everything all unbalanced.

some do, but I think that it's more often other men that are buying them.

frankly, I'm rather surprised that people still buy pornography at all in paper form.

I'd be willing to bet that far more women than men buy romance/erotica novels/collections. Maybe the genders just, on the whole, like to process their pr0n differently.

Some do. Most women I know of just like it for the novelty factor though.

I think that, as a culture, we find it more acceptable for women to read something racy than to view it. Women somehow tend to feel that, when it comes to viewing, they are on the guest list, but men just don't tend to slog through a 500 page romance novel to find out how depraved the sex fantasies there really are.

Oh, women's fantasies are way more depraved than men's are.

But a woman's sexuality is more mental, men's more visual.

I think men are culturally allowed to appreciate the visual and women are more discouraged, especially if a woman is visually attracted to a man. It is more okay, even with homophobia, for a woman to say a particular woman has a great body than to say it about a man.

I mean, look at the success of 30 Seconds to Mars. I think that is proof-positive that the female of the species is visually-stimulated, but it is more permitted if the pretense can be that the attraction is rock and roll.

    I haven't seen 30 seconds to Mars.

No, you find it more acceptable to imagine a woman being made wet by words than by images or video. I'm pretty sure you do not have wetness barometers in all women's panties.

In the UK, women buy Mills & Boon romance novels and such. Men seem to go for more "visual stimulation" than erotic written fiction.

There is very little erotic fiction aimed at men.

There is very little erotic photography or video aimed at women. BlueBlood.com has a crazy high percentage of female members as compared to any industry average.

i think that youce hit the proverbial nail right on the head there amelia. people tend to think that women want erotic fiction more than visual pornography, whereas 'obviously' men want to see sex as opposed to reading it. based on that assumption, more erotic fiction is written for women than men, and the majority of video/photographic pornography is likewise targeted at men. which isnt to say that there is any more or less demand, merely less public opinion of a demand.

that said the public opinion is less important (presumably) than the profit figure - if more male-oriented erotic fiction was bought then more would be made. that it isnt evidences a lack of interest. let me contradict myself again, though: it being easier to get porn vids than stories that cater to male tastes, most guys would just go with the easy option when they want to get their horn on.

i personally enjoy a well written bit of erotic literature. if its been written properly, i like it at least as much as i would a video displaying the exact same thing. i know sites to find either, depending on my mood.

Well, to be honest, most of the porn videos I've bought are either because they look cheesy and I will get a kick out of them, or gay porn. Magazine and internet wise, I tend to look more at latex clad or alternative looking females. I really don't see too many alternative males that seem to be geared towards women, than gay men.

If men don't like erotic fiction, why is there so much of it in Playboy and Penthouse?

If there's a market, it will be satisfied.

You'd know of this better than me, but it's my understanding that every time they've tried to make female-oriented porn, it's fallen flat on its ass.

Whereas romance novels, where "and she felt tremblings deep within her as he held her tightly, more secure and loved than she'd ever felt with Francesco" sells to the tune of FIVE A SECOND.

I know that clubs in which women take off their clothing for men to ogle, there are LEGION. Except for Seattle, where they have some kind of weird law that limited it to clubs that were pre-existing. Clubs where men take off their clothes, well, er, maybe ONE, and that, according to an ex-stripper friend of mine, is more a function of groups of women at some event like a stag party or whatever giggling and egging each other on. He also said that when they do go, they're animals - ripping at his clothes and offering him money to fellate him.

    Jury's out for me.

I personally believe money talks and academia walks, but I'm saying this respectfully, Amelia. Obviously, women may very well be repressed socially. But I've only known one girl out of ten who's actually liked the look of the German Soldier - most of them seem to find it a repulsive looking object,

Men's magazines feature beautiful women on the front cover.

A blueblood.com (sausage edition) would NOT have the same female viewership.

Money talks and theory walks, but it's my understanding a lot of women look at nude women as some form of wish fulfillment and fulfillment of bisexual impulses, rather than as a per se spank tank thing - but then again YMMV.

I am certainly never going to suggest I speak for any woman, never mind all women.

Markets are manipulated by cultural expectations. If a guy buys porn it is a little embarrassing. If a girl buys porn, "Oh My God! Is She Some Kind of Slut?"

Porn for women fails, in part at least, because guys are expected to have a stack of porn under their bed. Try this experiment. Send on of your friends to buy a copy of playgirl from a bookstore and watch the cashiers after she leaves.

Hell, the bibles sold millions of copies, but hardly anyone actually reads it.

A lot of the difficulty in marketing visual media to women is that there is (a) a strong cultural bias against women paying for it and (b) none of the support structures to sell it which exist to sell material aimed at men.

In print, I used to keep pretty careful track of the gender breakdowns (based on the imperfect science of guessing from names) and, if it got to be too heavily male, I would put more advertising in Cosmopolitan and On Our Backs, until it got more balanced. I tried to do the same thing online, when we launched SweetestDrop.com with a lot of our shots of men, and I had sites which claimed to be about porn for women refuse to SELL me links on the theory that linking to something with male nudity would make their sites somehow dirty.

The couples features on BlueBlood.com, of course feature good-looking male nudes and I personally prefer interactive shots to solo ones, but it would be nice it the market were better set up to sell to women.

I personally tend to loathe material which is supposed to be aimed at women because it tends to all be based on really incredibly dumb assumptions. For example, most of that dreck is uber-softcore and vewy vewy gentle when you could buy a romance novel at random with your eyes closed and find rough sex in its pages.

Doesn't the internet negate some of the social mores? I don't have statistics either way. It would seem more women (as with men) would view in the privacy of their own homes.

In some ways, I think the internet does free women up to look at stuff they normally might have been embarrassed to buy, but, when you whip out your credit card, it feels less anonymous.

We live in an age of digital media. Tis easier to go onto the net on download you favorite porn then going to store and buying a magazine. Back in the day for middle America buying your 1st porno mag was a right of passage. Now anyone with a healthy appetite and a connection can find any little fetish that strike. I think also the net has allowed for the further spread of fetish. Now it just be the circle I run with but many of my female look at porn just like the guys. I guess as long as there is a porn for all.

one of the key reasons i still like to purchase the magazine Marquis is the writing in it - erotic fantasy. im turned on by both the written word and images. but i often will get bored of looking at the same images over and over again. while the fiction i keep going back for. im "strange and unusual" in that way for a male, i guess.

I think the problem may be that men can find it hard to "multi-task" and thus can't hold a book, read and masturbate at the same time.

I could make the obvious joke about social pressure never stopping any woman from doing anything she wants to do. You're not to smoke *puff puff puff* WEARING PANTS IS FOR MEN (we call them slacks) etc. etc. etc.

I mean, even back in the early days:

Adam: This garden is rad, dude.
Eve: Yeah, totally. I love the way the sun makes my hips look hot.
    Adam: Me too, frankly.
God: Have fun, kids. Do whatever you like, just don't eat that fruit over there.
    Adam: Sure enough.
    Eve: Why not?
    God: Cause I said so.
    Eve: Yeah, but why? *pout*
God: Well, if you must ask, cause if you do this Paradise is going to disappear, you'll have to grow old, suffer and die. Sin will come into the world and every man woman and child in existence will burn in hell forever, except for several thousand years from now, I'll have myself nailed to a cross and hung to die in agony
    Adam: What's agony?
God: Shut up. As I said, in agony, and if some people choose to believe I did that so they wouldn't scream in terror and agony forever after a miserable existence of a few decades scratching life out of the dirt, then they will have what you have right now.
Eve: You're not the boss of me.
    God: Excuse me?
    Eve: hmph.
    God leaves
Eve: Okay, tell me it's okay to eat the apple.
    Adam: Are you crazy?
Eve: FINE. I'll go find a friend who'll tell me what I want to hear.
Satan: Sweetheart, the red of that apple skin would look SO divine against your beautiful lips. You go girl! You know, Adam NEVER supports you in anything. He keeps you down ALL THE TIME.
    Eve: Really? *pluck* *crunch*

I don't think women are the blushing creatures we say they are.

    BB couples, eh? hmmmmmm

I could see that I suppose. I'm a total inet shopper so I never give it much thought. It probably would stop some women if they felt unsure about proprieties.

Whatever I like to look at, it always involves me and hubby, and our entertaining fantasies!!!
I like girl on girl, or boy on boy, more than girl on boy...
Me and hubby both have the same taste in people. So we enjoy the same stuff at the same time.

    OH yeah!!!
Esp when its all passionate and stuff.... I'm not going to mention any names, but me and my husband like to have artistic images of androgynous men, and hot women, in a slide show when we fuck, I love watching him react to the men and the women, and vice versa... I FUCKING LOVE IT!!! I love the time we're living in.... the sexual revolution, in this stage of it, is not as free as I'D like it, but it still rawks.

I'm so glad *we're* in this minority together.

(mmmm... he *gets* me differently when we see pics of the androgynous dudes... OH how I love that)

...but I think its HOT for all MY reasons as well
