Those with a hobby grow them in windows and under grow lights....
Next time you go to the home depot, ask them if they have some phalaenopsis orchids. Usually they'll have a section either outside when they bring in the landscaping flowers, THEY'RE GROWN UNDER SHADE. OR with the african VIOLETS (those are popular house plants all over the place....)
Phal's are the easiest to start off with.

I've cultivated harder to grow species/hybrids.... but phalaenopsis orchids are my favorites.

Where I live gets brutally cold. I know what phaleonopsis is, and it doesn't thrive.

Orchids are easy to kill.

Not indoors, I know of tons of ppl in Canada that grow them indoors.

They'd die here in Ky as well.
I even have to bring them in during cold parts of the winter in Florida.

A number of genera, such as Bletilla, Calanthe, and Cremastra, are no more challenging than ferns or trilliums, even in the cold.
