one of the things a lot of SF writers do is to create what's called a future history; it's where you make up a timeline of things that might happen, and you go into great detail over what happens to whom and when. then they write stories set in that future, explaining the key events and so forth.

i made one in which a certain city towards the south of a certain southern continent was bombed with radiation, biological and chemical warfare agents, and basically made uninhabitable. except for a group of goths who moved in and actually liked it. heh.
