I really don't care that much, but having something inconsequential to bitch about when all else is well can be quite satifying.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8343367/

Lauer: Katie has mentioned that she is embracing, or at least exposing herself and opening herself up to, Scientology. At this stage in your life, could you be with someone who doesn't have an interest?

Cruise: You know, Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like, you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist, okay. Scientology is something—

Lauer: So, it doesn't replace religion.

Cruise: It is a religion. Because it's dealing with the spirit. You as a spiritual being. It gives you tools you can use to apply to your life.

(We asked Cruise to explain his recent comments regarding Brooke Shields. Cruise created a firestorm when he criticized Shields for revealing that she went into therapy and took antidepressants to deal with her postpartum depression. Cruise has said that, as a Scientologist, he doesn't believe in psychiatric medicine.)

Cruise: I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology.

And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science.

Lauer: But Tom, if she said that this particular thing helped her feel better, whether it was the antidepressants or going to a counselor or psychiatrist, isn't that enough?

Cruise: Matt, you have to understand this. Here we are today, where I talk out against drugs and psychiatric abuses of electric shocking people, okay, against their will, of drugging children with them not knowing the effects of these drugs. Do you know what Aderol is? Do you know Ritalin? Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?

    Lauer: The difference is —

    Cruise: No, no, Matt.

Lauer: This wasn't against her will, though.

Cruise: Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt —

Lauer: But this wasn't against her will.

Cruise: Matt, I'm asking you a question.

Lauer: I understand there's abuse of all of these things.

Cruise: No, you see. Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.

Lauer: Aren't there examples, and might not Brooke Shields be an example, of someone who benefited from one of those drugs?

Cruise: All it does is mask the problem, Matt. And if you understand the history of it, it masks the problem. That's what it does. That's all it does. You're not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.

Lauer: So, postpartum depression to you is kind of a little psychological gobbledygook —

Cruise: No. I did not say that.

Lauer: I'm just asking what you, what would you call it?

Cruise: No. No. Abso— Matt, now you're talking about two different things.

Lauer: But that's what she went on the antidepressant for.

Cruise: But what happens, the antidepressant, all it does is mask the problem. There's ways, [with] vitamins and through exercise and various things... I'm not saying that that isn't real. That's not what I'm saying. That's an alteration of what I'm saying. I'm saying that drugs aren't the answer, these drugs are very dangerous. They're mind-altering, antipsychotic drugs. And there are ways of doing it without that so that we don't end up in a brave new world. The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it, Matt.

extra disturbing? not extra. this is a cult, remember, which means members aren't allowed to leave. if they do, they are harassed for the rest of their lives - that's a Scientology tactic called "Fair Game".

i was mildly concerned at learning how they murdered Lisa McPherson, but since then i've discovered lots of people have died in relation to Scientology.

having read a lot of text on both sides of the argument, i tend to agree with Enturbulator 9 / El Queso Allstars, from their song about L Ron Hubbard, "Make Money, Make More Money":

    Pill poppin', rum swiggin',
    wife beatin', friend cheatin',
    check bouncin', ass wobblin,
    race hatin', goat bombin',
    homophobic, coke sniffin',
    chain smokin', salad quizzin',
    warrant dodgin', no good conman.

hey! the last two on that list are perfectly good religions! as a Subgenius minister i take offence at being lumped in with those Mormon fools.

    ...

say, Amelia, did you know that the reason you're unhappy is because you have millions of tiny invisible fragments of alien souls stuck to your body? yes, they're called Body Thetans, and only the Church of Scientology can get them off you.

point form, why i think the Scienos are a bad idea:

    * they won't do anything at all for you unless you give them A LOT of money (unlike charitable bodies such as the Uniting Church)

    * they encourage you to cut off all contact with friends and family.

    * they make you do hours and hours of pointless paperwork detailing why you think you aren't getting all the benefits of Scientology even though you've been on the course for a year and a half and have spent fifteen thousand dollars on it so far.

    * the mystical mind-control exercises! once, trainee Clams were required to stare at their trainer's eyes, WITHOUT BLINKING, for six hours. too many people were dropping out of the course, so they lightened that requirement.

    * the e-meter. it's supposed to be able to determine your mental health; it's actually just a voltmeter connected to two tin cans. the operator makes the needle wobble by fiddling with the dials. diagnosis: you're ill! you need our help! sign here, please.

    * the daily routine, once you're inside the system, is devoted to lowering your resistance to their control. as soon as you run out of money to pay for their tapes and books and courses you can join them as an indentured slave: little or no sleep, hours and hours of repetitive, boring make-work, food that's low in protein, the constant scrutiny and criticism of those above you. these people have the power to send you back a grade if they don't like your attitude, or if they are having a bad day. back a grade = approximately $8,000 - $10,000 worth of training and "Auditing", or, say, another four year's work.

the working conditions, as Lisa McPherson discovered, are somewhat sub-par.

    * if you try to leave, they'll keep in touch; surveillance, threatening phone calls at home, to your parents, to your employer; you'll be put on bulk mailing lists like the Reader's Digest simply for the annoyance value. rocks through the window at night. car tyres slashed. the usual deal with a cult.

    * if you're a celebrity, there's a different path: in exchange for regular donations of cash to the cult, you're assigned several "handlers" who prepare statements for you to read, make sure you're staying away from all those enturbulating people you used to hang out with, and in the case of Tom Cruise, they promote Scientology on the sets of films he's working on.

Amelia, if you're serious about wanting to join these people, i suggest you don't take your credit card with you.

    L. Ron Hubbard was EVIL. Plain and simple.

Think about this, he was an admitted racist from the time he was a child. He's a sociopathic liar, writing memoirs that detail fictional accounts of his own life (things that are easily contested if you ask the people who knew him, which has all been properly documented). Not many people remember that he was once a high ranking member of the O.T.O. He was one of Jack Parsons best friends. Parsons even wrote letters to Aleister Crowley about how great Hubbard was. That was, until he suckered Parsons out of not only his woman (which Hubbard brainwashed him into excepting joyfully), but over $200,000 which he used to skip from the west coast to florida with Jack's woman in the guise of a business venture. You know you are a bastard when even Aleister Crowley condemns you a scam artist. He's a bigomist, an egoist, and probably one of the world's WORST science fiction writers.
Remember, he wrote Dianetics as a self help book. Then after publically admitting that "the real money is in starting your own religion" at a speaking event... he created scientology not even a year later as a way to propel his book further down the throats of the weakminded and use the angle as an obvious tax write-off.
Tom Cruise is a nutjob for following his teachings.
Did you know how he invited Scarlet Johanssen to dinner at his house when she originally got the role of Tom Cruises love interest in MI-3? He sits her down to a nice meal, then proceeds to bombard her with talk of his "church". Trying to get her to show some interest. After the meal, he then brings her into another room in his home. The room was filled up with high level scientologists all ready and waiting to induct Scarlet into their "faith". She took off and dropped out of the movie a few days later.
Scientology is EXACTLY what TIME Magazine said it was... a GLOBAL SCAM.
It's not like there aren't CLUES to the fact that it's all a farce. Do you know that Hubbard's "e-meters" are required to have a warning on the bottom stating that they have no actual medical effect, that they are solely the tools of the church and their followers. The e-meters have their own "this machine is bullshit" warning... and people STILL believe in it.
If for some reason, Scientology isn't a lie... why would you want to be on THEIR side. I say, if that was the case, we should all devote ourselves to the "Lord XENU" (the fictional enemy of the thetans). I think the intergalactic lord of planets was right to have these crazies exterminated in a volcano with hydrogen bombs from their DC-10 looking spaceships. Maybe we should perform a re-enactment... starting with the members from the celebrity center.

Sorry, if I flew off the handle and got a bit longwinded. I have a thing against crooked cults running in disguise as peaceful religions/faiths. And I hate people like Tom Cruise who are fine influencing people into cultish beliefs that could hurt them like, not taking anti-psychotics. But, when one of your friends loses his mind, and kills himself from a lack of proper medication... words like the ones from Cruise make me want to drop a few H-BOMBS over Hemet, California (home of the now not so secret SCIENTOLOGIST compound).

Don't forget, what they are doing to you is the kind of harassment they use against most people. The most infamous online spamming was the massive propaganda posting campaign against "alt.news.scientology" which lasted for seven months.
You're lucky they don't know where you live. They enjoy silencing campaigns like, dropping slanderous leaflets in your neighborhood, slashing your tires, dropping poisonous snakes in your mailbox.
This is all under the scientologist credo known as "Fair Game".

"Supressive persons may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. They may be tricked, sued, lied to or destroyed." - L. Ron Hubbard

Here is a sure fire way of getting that snake you have been wishing for. Start by finding the address for your nearest Scientology center. Send them a letter detailing that you plan on starting a campaign of protest against their organization. Add whatever means you can think of implementing to hammer it home. Make sure you leave a return address on the letter. You'll have a 1 in 10 chance of them sending back some poisonous snakes just for you. My advise, to improve your chances. Mention somewhere in the letter about having an intense FEAR of snakes. That might improve the odds just enough to get what you want. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

perhaps have letterhead that says "National Fear of Snakes Association". their motto would be (in latin, of course) "we's shit-scairt of snakes."
