Default Reasons To Join Or Also Not Join?

The army recruiter seems to want Me to join them, but I dont know if I will pass the asvab test that they mentioned. I don't really want to join them at all, but it is as a last resort, which I may have to do in a week or so.

I don't recomend it, but if you do enlist try the Air Force or the Navy. You get better tech training for jobs after you get out, the living conditions are better overall, and you have less chance of being shot.

If I do join them, it will probably be as an Infantry Type Soldier.

I'd probably go ahead and sign up for a short tour if I were you. Like don't commit the rest of your life to the armed service, but, for now, it is almost certainly better than where you are at.

I am seeking other options, but the army is probably going to be what I have to do, although I really, really don't want to go there at all.

    I say join...see the world...meet interesting people...kill them.

Ok seriously...what is it you want to do AFTER your military duty? That should determine your choice for your branch of the military. Like it said above...naval and air force careers give you better tech training and you won't be shot at. You can sign up for sub duty in the navy for example.

If you want to go the Army route your odds of serving in an active war zone are pretty good...but you're also an only child (I assume anyhow) so you may end up seeing deployment in Korea or Eastern Europe.

Truth of the matter is if you're gonna be shot at...be a Marine. You'll get better training as an All American Killing Machine...and when you're being shot at you'll at least know you and those with you know their shit weapons wise.

All in all though...your choice...it's not as great as recruiters make it out to be but it's also not as bad as others sell it. It's like anything..it has its highs and lows.

I think you'd be better off in the Navy personally.

I can't give you any reasons to join or not to join, that sort of thing gets a little personal. From what you have posted you want to get out of where you are any the army could do that for you, but it could also get you killed. It is a gamble on every level of the word. I used to have a lot of freinds in the Navy and they all passed on advice.

Go for a specialty if you can. In the current climate you will prbably be doing infantry when it comes down to it, but push for some sort of training. I have known too many people who left the armed services who never picked up any skills. Look at the options they have, see if any interest you and push for it. Also know that they are going to offer anything you want to get you in. Get it in writing, at least. Ask some people who actually have served (all my info is second hand) but I have seen it happen to people. They get promised x or y training and never get it because it was all just the recruiter saying it, no paper, no backup, nothing.

I can't tell you wether or not you should join, but if you do join get everything you can out of it. Don't just use it as a way to get out of town, use it as a way to get closer to what you want.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you go in with little or no real education all you are going to be is a grunt. srubbing toilets or whatnot. you will probably end up infintry which means you are the expendable ones in the front. you can see the world. you will learn to be tough and you will learn to drink like a fish but you will be owned by the US Gov. they will tell you when to eat, shit, and sleep. so its up to you man do you think thats something you want out of life?

Don't forget the shooting, the marching, and the oh so fun camping!!!

Ok camping is a bit diffrent in the army than as a civilian BUT the basic principle is the same...only with high explosives.

also a recruiters job is to get you to sign up so he will tell you anything to get you to sign. once you sign you are now property of the US Gov. and they can do anything they want with you. so make sure you get what you want before you sign up and get it in writing.

i would reccomend the coast gaurd they give you really really good training there esp if you would consider doing police work or something like that afterwards either that or the air force, or maybe the Navy as those two have fairly low casualty rates unless you want to go to a warzone somewhere i would advise against the marines or the army and BTW the ASVAB is really really easy and you shouldnt have a problem passing it

I recommend the Navy dude.............. you get to do Basic in Chicago. And in the current state of things you probably won't get shot. My uncle is a prime example of the military being a good thing. He didn't know shit before he joined, he's going to be retiring from the Navy soon, and he's looking to do the same job at Lockheed Martin. He teaches sailors how to use the AEGIS system and when he's at sea, he fires missiles (pretty cool huh?). So if and when he gets his job at Lockheed, he'll be making 8 times what he made as a sailor. I'd go with the Navy.

    First off
The ASVAB test is a placement exam you cant fail. Its used to determine what your natural skills and abilities are for future jobs in the military. The better you score, the more job opportunities you qualify for. So dont sweat "passing" it.

    Second
Do not under any circumstance trust your recruiter. They are a bunch of lying pricks

    Third
Personally I believe a short term military experience can enrich anyones life, as well as being eligible for benefits for life as a veteran. Just be sure to examine all branches before deciding on one.

    Good luck...it's a big decision

    (Army vet, by the way)

first of all if you are going to join the military do it because you want to be in the military not just because you want money from the government for not doing anything. If that's what you want you can get welfare and food stamps, and it's a lot less work. If you want money for college you can get grants and if you study hard enough and get good grades you can get an academic scholarship. and if you want to travel and see the world.. well, I'm sorry but you'll have to do that on your own. it's not like your going to be stationed in the louvre in paris, you're probibly going to go to the middle east which I don't really think people have in mind for a great vacation spot.

Just don't do what I did. I had a high enough ASVAB score to get almost any MOS, but chose being a tanker(Armor Crewman). The M1A1 was fun, but doesn't give you any civilian job skills. Choose something technical. As an Army vet, I'll be straight with you and say don't. It was fun, but in the long run Navy or Air Force will give you more, and they also have much better duty stations around the world.
By the way, think about sub duty in the Navy. Lots of technical skills for post service civillian employment, long periods of fuck off time on shore, little chance of being shot at, and with no sunlight for long periods of time you can have wonderfully pale skin

I dont think I will join them, since I really don't want to.
That was kind of a rash decision, since I was and still am scared, but they are a very last resort.

There is a certain person I would rather be with anyway.

I'm not trying a jerk but you seem way to needy and sensitive for military action. I'm thinking you'll end up like Pvt. Pyle from 'Full Metal Jacket' or something. Why don't you join the Peace Corps instead. You get paid, and I imagine the girl to guy ratio is better.

    Just my thoughts.

    Go Coast Guard.

You'll end up with some excellent maritime skills to boost your confidence. You'll generally be stationed in nice and relatively safe places. You can save lives and perform a vital function. Please, at least contact them! I think this would be a better option for you. You will get the full scholastic bennies.

The test is a piece of cake. I took it. I was thinking of joining up. They had me pegged to go to Tennessee or something to be a linguist. I declined. Just try it, can't hurt.

Look for the coast guard under the listing for the Dept. of Transportaion (fed) in the front of your phone book. If you're interested in them they will come to you.

Greets 23 I'm starting in 2 weeks. Just got back from vacation in California. Will probably be pretty sporadic posting here. I'm doing good. It was an interesting summer in that I saw people I hadn't seen for years. How have you been?

Really? You may be able to contact the national office and they'll have someone local. You can enlist in the CG if you have a diploma or GED

The following are the basic requirements for joining, you should:
Be a United States citizen or nationalized to be a Coast Guard officer. To enlist, you must be a United States citizen or a Resident Alien. Be between the ages of 17-27 for Active Duty. If you are 17, you'll need parental consent. Reservists must be between 17-39, Prior service personnel should contact their local recruiter. Have a high school diploma. GEDs are accepted in special circumstances. Have no more than two dependents. Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. Pass a military entrance medical exam. Be the type of person who wants to serve the public on or around the water.
